X-post....puppy/pet store question...see updte/edit below
DH and i are looking for a puppy...i want to adopt but we stiooed in a pet store that had a sign for puppies so we stopped in i figured maybe they had a few to adopt with a small adoption fee. They had a really cute cocker spaniel mixed with a beagle which surprisingly looked like a lab. It was 12 weeks old and had its first set of shots. It was microchipped as well. The puppy was $800...$500 if we paid cash. They said it came with a one year health guarantee. Does this seem shady to anyone else? As adorable as the puppy is i am inclined to adopt. Any input?

Re: X-post....puppy/pet store question
Personally, I would only adopt an animal from a shelter or a rescue facility. I searched before adopting our dog from someone who could not take care of him. In the past, my family rescued a yorkie who was abused. He lived a great life with us. He had to put him to sleep at the age of 17.
When I was younger my family adopteda dog from a store and at the age of 8, without warning, he died of a heart attack. I belive he came from a puppy mill.

Re: X-post....puppy/pet store question
As cute as the puppy is, it is most likely from a backyard breeder. I would never purchase from a pet store. And they are looking for 800 dollars for a mixed breed dog? Essentially a mutt...and it is even more shady they would take 500 in cash.
Don't do it---please. CHeck out petfinder or look for a registered reputable AKC breeder.

Re: X-post....puppy/pet store question
my input is PLEASE PLEASE do not buy a puppy or any other animal from a pet store. Do some research on puppy mills and you will see why stick with a REPUTABLE breeder or petfinder.com

I would absolutely NOT buy any puppy from a pet store; here's a link to the locked topic on the LIF Pets board

This is EXACTLY what I was going to say and link.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do NOT buy a puppy from a pet store.
I volunteer at a shelter and I cannot begin to tell you how many wonderful dogs are out there that need forever homes. It's heart breaking.
If you're looking for a particular breed, PLEASE check out PETFINDER.COM

Re: X-post....puppy/pet store question...see update/edit below
Im sorry...after rereading my original post it seemed as if i was considering the puppy. DH and i only want to adopt. The dog i had at my parents house (family dog that i had at my parents) was a mix...he is a black lab mixed with what appears to be an irish wolfhound. I think what i hoped to accomplish with my original post is that something shady is going on in that pet store and it really bothered me. I cant stop thinking about how strange the situation in there is. We are hoping to adopt our first furbaby in June as soon as im finished teaching for the school year

Oh sorry!! But yeah, you're right, and from what I know ALLLLL pet stores that sell puppies are "shady"; I'm the wacko who stands outside those stores with my dog and (nicely) tells people NEVER to buy a puppy from a pet store.... I'm amazed how many people really don't know about the situation with puppy mills

Shelters are definitely a great place to find a dog! Not sure if you're looking for a specific breed of dog, but if you are you can usually find rescue groups that place dogs (sometimes they have puppies too). Good luck!

This is excellent advice...we got Misty through the Weimaraner Rescue - she cost us nothing and has been the most amazing dog!

Actually, that's my breed of choice I love Weims (my mom has one) and I recently looked into rescuing one but we're going to wait until we move into a bigger home.
