Re: xpost:brooklyn jury duty question-please help!
I was called for jury duty in criminal court in Riverhead recently. That is also a b!tchass for me to get to.
The judge asked "if anyone has any reason that they would not be able to commit to this case for at least 4 weeks please raise your hand".
I did and was immediately excused.
Worse case scenario could you travel to Bklyn by train? I thought I heard some people say it is easily accessible by LIRR.
And don't most day cares tend to open around 6AM?
Most people I know who commute to the city and have kids have no issues making it there on time.
I know jury duty is a PITA but I see it from both sides and I also have a child ;).

You can definitely tell them your situation and see if you can be excused or least postpone for a later date. If not, I would suggest you avoid driving there. Parking in downtown Brooklyn is a nightmare. Plus, you'll probably be able to get back and forth to LI a little quicker by train. Good luck.

I would then bring proof of that from the daycare as well as show them that you do not have anyone else who could pick your child up, if that is the case.

Re: xpost:brooklyn jury duty question-please help!
Most days you are out way before 5 pm. If you are sitting in the jury room waiting to be picked, they will usually let you go right after lunchtime.
If you get questioned to sit on a jury, they will ask if you have a hardship.
You might get lucky and just have to call each night and not actually have to go in (depending on what your number is).
Also, I don't know if they still do this but when you call in, they can tell you that you need to report to Court in Suffolk instead. The US District Courts are located in Brooklyn & Suffolk and they need to pull from potential jurors from Nassau, Suffolk, Queens, Brooklyn and Staten Island to get a fair representation in the jury pool.

Is this for federal court? I live in Queens and had to commute to Brooklyn for Grand Jury Duty. They accepted NO excuses and they chose people from all over the boroughs and LI because it's Federal court. I just want to make you aware that it might not be possible.
They did, however, reimburse me for travel.

Yup, Federal Court is in Brooklyn. You could take LIRR there, but I don't know that you'll save much time. Parking in that area is a PITA too.
My husband got called to Federal Court recently, but he was told to go to West Islep. Can you call them and offer to serve there instead since child are is an issue? Though I would see if I could skip it completely.

Unfortunately, ITA. My aunt had to travel from Eastern Suffolk to Brooklyn, despite the fact that she was in her upper 60s and was the sole caregiver for my uncle, who was disabled as a result of a massive stroke. I believe she was able to postpone once, but she was called again and had to make it in there.

Do NOT drive in DH is a cop in Brooklyn and when he has to testify in that court HE can't even park. They don't even allow cops to park around there with official business parking plaques. The only time he can park there is if he is a police car and not his personal car. The parking is a nightmare Make arrangements for public transportation!

Re: xpost:brooklyn jury duty question-please help!
When my kids were young I used to get notices for jury duty in Brooklyn. I would send the LIRR schedule along with the filled out jury duty notice, highlighting the trains I'd have to take to get there. I needed a 6:10am train to get to the court house by 9am and wouldn't get back home until after 9 pm, assuming I was let off at 5 pm.
I also sent a note explaining I had kids under ten (that usually gets you excused).
One time I gleefully wrote that I'd love to serve, Did they have a room available where I could nurse my baby during breaks?
I always got let off.
On the other hand, I'm sure they must have made some notation. Right after my youngest turned ten I was called in for Federal Grand Jury Duty at Islip (closer to me than Brooklyn) and had to serve every Tuesday for two years.
The Grand Jury judge was very strict about letting people out of serving. Very few were allowed off after speaking privately with her. A woman next to me got increasingly hysterical and actually fell off her chair onto the floor screaming and crying that she couldn't serve two years as she rolled around down there. She got let off. The rest of us sat there frozen in horror at the woman's performance and didn't dare say a word.

they let you off with that last note because it was obvious that you were a SAHM.. her on the other hand has children in daycare.. which means she has someone to care for her children...

WHAT??? TWO YEARS? They can make you serve for TWO YEARS? How could any employer be ok with that? My boss would have a stroke if I had to go every Tuesday for 2 years. That is freakin ridiculous. I am sorry. INSANITY.
And I would have been that woman rolling around on the floor- if it got me out of that kind of 2 year prison sentence I would have run around naked barking like a dog!!!!!

If I have to go there and can't take the train, I usually park at the Marriott - it's not cheap but it's pretty close to the courthouse. Would totally recommend the train though.
