ya or nay for communion party theme
My DS is making his communion on 5/4. He loves tacos and Mexican food. I was thinking of doing a Cinco de Mayo theme. Maybe having it catered by a local Mexican restaurant. Is this cheesy? Would it look weird if I also did some Cinco de Mayo decorations? I was thinking little cactus in painted terra cotta pots as centerpiece/favors, some brighter colored table cloths etc. I know this is very different than the traditional baby blue for boys' communions.
What do you think?

Re: ya or nay for communion party theme
i like it because it's personal to him. and i love mexican food!!
i have a whole pinterest board on "fiesta" themed items because that was the original way i was going for SO's party.
and you don't have to go "cheesy" with it... you can keep it to just bright colors and a few mexican-type items along with the food.

I think it sounds great!! I wouldn't do cinco de mayo decorations per say, but like Marathon said, bright table clothes, maybe those flag banners, I like the cactus centerpieces, though I saw a few other ideas that would work well...
I love these bright colored lanterns, but that can get pricey.
Maybe not the most appropriate for kid's party... but I like it. lol!
Etsy even has invites that work with your theme because of course they do...

I like this idea. I would not over-do Cinco-de Mayo. I like your idea of cacti centerpieces, and bright tablecloths. The pictures momma2015 posted , especially the invitation would be nice.

I love the idea, specially if your DS likes Mexican food. Love the bright colors in the pictures posted.

Idk...I think having a theme for a communion party seems odd. I might serve Mexican food but that’s about it.

I agree. This all makes me very uncomfortable. I don’t really get tying in a Mexican cultural victory with a celebration of a Holy sacrament. I think it’s also a little confusing to a second grader who went to religious education and learned all their prayers to achieve this sacrament.

I think I would do a traditional party but just serve Mexican food. I wouldn’t go crazy with Mexican theme decorations or give out hot sauce as favors. I think it would be great for a birthday party though!

I agree. But my opinion on Communions in general seems not to be popular judging by what I saw when dd made hers last year. Apparently for many it's a mini child wedding and the last time the child will be in church until their confirmation after all the hoopla is over.

All of this. The theme is God, Sorry if that makes anyone uncomfortable, but making your Communion is a Holy Catholic Sacrament. Whatever you do, I just beg that you do not take a PP's suggestion and have a cross shaped pinata. I can't imaging anything more blasphemous then knocking down a CROSS to get candy.

Serving Mexican food and having cacti as centerpieces is not in anyway taking away from the religious sacrament. She is just looking to do something different and serve something that her son likes.
I guess I am not invited to the communion parties where everyone sits around and talks about Jesus.

I agree too- when people would ask me the them of my wedding I would say marriage.
I would love Mexican food at a communion though. and the colors don't have to be light blue.

I'm sorry but it's a Nay for me. Communion is a holy sacrament and should be the theme in of itself.

People do themed weddings, I say go for it. 5/4 is also May the 4th be with You (for all those Star Wars fans)

Re: ya or nay for communion party theme
To me, Communion is a sacred sacrament. If Mexican food is your choice of food to serve, that is fine. But I would find it sacrilegious to turn it into a whole theme (decorations, etc.), whether you mention cinco de mayo or not.
Eta: and please don’t do a cross-shaped piñata. That is extremely offensive.

This, 100%.
I don’t see why the type of food she serves or the decorations she puts up during dinner detracts from the sacrament.
How is it any different from those ridiculous candy tables or people who have magicians or whatever other entertainment during the communion party. Communion isn’t about candy or magic yet those seem to fly, no problem.
OP, I would love to go to a communion where I wasn’t forced to eat penne ala vodka and chicken franchese and stare at those hideous party city cross balloons, all in the name of the “theme” being communion.

Then you would have loved ours. We had a small intimate gathering of family only at an upscale restaurant where everyone orderd off the regular menu and we just picked up the bill. We had no theme, no candy table, no cross decorations.
I just don't feel a theme is necessary at a religious event. But serving Mexican food is more than fine and would be more than welcome. Something different.

ITA. And for anyone saying a Communion is a sacred event- so is a wedding. But so many people have themes and color schemes. I mean she's not having her kid wearing a sombrero on the altar.

While I agree 10000000% that a wedding is a Holy Sacrament, that is only for people who choose to get married in a Church. Lots of marriages are not performed in the Church, but ALL of Communions are. It's apples & oranges. But ITA, I don'y understand wedding themes either.
