Mexican food - yay A smattering of cool decor/favors that people actually want like hot sauce - yay Making it a Cinco de Mayo theme - nah Having a cross piñata - you’re on the highway to hell
Agreed!!
And honestly I love the idea of having Mexican food as opposed to the usual S&P, penne and chicken.
FYI, Swell Taco does a food truck.
My son is making his communion the following weekend and I am trying to figure out where to have it catered from that is different.

It's not the venue that is in question. Or the food choice. It's more of the idea of a theme and making it about the date- cinco de mayo- than about the sacrament itself.
So I reiterate my question, I live in the land of BIG PARTIES for Communions. So, if it has a DJ, a candy table, giveaways, THAT is celebrating the sacrament?

No, and nobody said that. Food was never the thing in questions.

Also, for anyone who is so up in arms about a religious event having a theme, have you never been to a bar/bat mitzvah?
I have, and I think the over the top celebrations for that is also taking away from the religious aspect of the day.
However I guess that seems to be the norm nowadays. I’m just not part of a big party kinda family either. If I had it my way my wedding would’ve been a backyard BBQ

Re: ya or nay for communion party theme
So bar and bat mitzvah parties have themes, weddings have themes, I think you can have a themed communion, but I would ixnay the pinata. I would not be comfortable hitting a cross, and I am jewish. I can't even imagine how badly a catholic person would feel doing something like that. But I have to ask, are you Hispanic? I could totally see a Hispanic family celebrating their heritage, I am not so sure I would do it if I were like Irish catholic.

Re: ya or nay for communion party theme
Unless her child is being followed down the aisle by a mariachi band - I don't think having Mexican food, some cute cactus centerpieces and hot sauce favors is doing anything sacrilegious. The church is the church - the party is whatever you make of it. You don't technically need a party as part of your communion sacrament. It's a choice. And you choose to celebrate it however you want.
P.S. I love Mexican food. Totally have some make your own taco & fajita tables set up! People will love it

Idk...I think having a theme for a communion party seems odd. I might serve Mexican food but that’s about it.
I agree. Isnt a communion the theme!??
I agree. This all makes me very uncomfortable. I don’t really get tying in a Mexican cultural victory with a celebration of a Holy sacrament. I think it’s also a little confusing to a second grader who went to religious education and learned all their prayers to achieve this sacrament.
I agree. The whole Mexican theme for a Holy Communion party seems really odd to me. Serving Mexican food is about the only part of it that I’d be comfortable with.

Re: ya or nay for communion party theme
Go ahead.. I don’t think a catering hall or DJ, balloon person or magician screams religion so why can’t you do a certain them or color that your son wants. It’s his day, he did the sacrament.
We went out to dinner with the god parents after my sons communion but I didn’t do the party. And for his baptism instead of throwing that money into a party, we went to Aruba. My son knows what both sacraments meant and the religious meaning.
Extreme parties to me is not religious at all, so do what you want. The parties are a celebration of the sacrament that happen, why not do it the way the guest of honor would enjoy. No one is sitting around doing the rosary or praying - so please let people side eye all they want. It’s your money and you and your son enjoy it.
But I frigging love Mexican food too, so I’m very biased lol.

On a side note, reading through these comments got me thinking.... we all agree a cross piñata is bad, but then why is it okay to eat a cross-shaped cookie?!

Because you're not physically beating it with a stick.

yea i agree with nervousnell... when i made that comment about how cute the pinata would be, i was thinking more about the fact that it fit the theme more than the fact that it was a cross lol

Re: ya or nay for communion party theme
I feel like I’ve seen crossed shape piñatas at parties before, also a lot of them have the boring strings you pull so would won’t necessarily beat the cross.

Honestly, I personally don't believe in that either. Mini weddings, expensive dresses to make the girls look like mini child brides, and then never in church again after the big party is over. The behavior of people in church for the communions shows me that most of them haven't been in one in years and probably never will be again until the next big "party"
But to each their own.
This is unrelated to the OP, but this post is spot on. I just saw someone I went to HS with post a picture on FB of their daughter shopping for a communion dress holding an "I said Yes to the Dress" sign.
Talk about taking away from the sacrament. These are little girls. Its not a wedding dress.

Same here! Last year when DD was making her communion I saw that on my FB too. Seems to be the new thing. Honestly, it's a bit creepy. They aren't brides! Want to hear what's sad? When we went to the meeting about Communion at our church they actually had to put in the info page that private photographers were not permitted in the church and no limos were allowed. Limos!!! I mean whats a girl supposed to do with her bridal party???

I've seen the Said Yes to the Dress Communion thing... I thought it was too much, too. They don't really pick out their own dresses, do they?

this is f#cking ridiculous
I rather go to a Cinco De Mayo theme communion then see this posted on my social media. lol.
(Side Note) BTW Cinco de Mayo is not celebrated by Mexicans, this is an American overrated celebration. So no latinos would be offended by this.

I took my DD dress shopping this past weekend and the two women working with us asked her if she was saying yes to the dress when she made her final decision. I thought it was cute and funny at that time. But that’s as far as it went, no signs or anything.
And yes, she did pick out her own dress.
