If it meant the schools staying open and they had to do sweeping random tests (ie a note comes home and says you have to go for testing and bring the results in) id be fine with that. All in an effort to keep the numbers down and keep schools open. The way things are going right now we will be back in shut down mode, and all the same people will be complaining about how things should be wide open. If you want them open be a part of the solution. Wear your mask. Get tested if you need to. Keep gatherings small. Maintain distance. These are not hard things to do.
People ARE wearing masks so are they not working if they claim so many people are testing positive?
WHAAAAT? This is crazy. People are all over the place having playdates, going to the park, halloween parties (ahem the current spikes). They are NOT wearing masks when doing this stuff and now look!! If people acted in real life the way they have been at school the numbers wouldnt be up!
They have been all over the place for months. I don't believe that Halloween parties contributed to spikes but I am not going to get into how I feel.

And we do ALL of those things. And if they want to test my daughter, fine, so be it. But I will be there for it. And since I'm not allowed to set foot in the school, I will take her to the practitioner of my choice. School is not the place for medical things of any nature IMO. I'm still her parent... COVID or not
Exactly. If it’s an immediate medical emergency and she needs CPR or to brace a broken limb—fine. But I will take her to her doctor for any required testing.
It typically will not be your pediatrician administering the test anyway. It will most likely be a nurse on the staff. Pediatricians will become so overwhelmed. I'm wondering if anyone that thinks it's important to be there for the test has actually ever had the test or had their child tested. I am only wondering because the test takes less then ten seconds and is minimally invasive. I am not being snarky - before I had it I was literally losing sleep over it. But once I experienced it for myself and my child I realized how nothing of a thing it actually is.
Lol yes I know how the doctor’s office works. The nurse gives all vaccinations in our office.
My point was, if it is a nurse at the doctors office vs. a nurse at the school, what's the difference?

Nobody is testing your kids without permission and nobody is getting test in the school itself.
I agree no one is getting tested without permission but wondering why you think it won't happen in schools. You should read what's posted on the NYC schools website:
NYC Schools COVID Testing Policy
I don't think this was implemented yet but I am not sure why you think they won't eventually be testing everyone in a school setting.

It appears they will use a saliva test. i don't think this was implemented yet but I am not sure why you think they won't eventually be testing everyone in a school setting.
They have implemented it. They were at my son's school the first week in November and tested 31 students.
They use a nasal swab but not the long one.

Oh okay! I hadn't heard about it being implemented. That's great!

I hope it will never happen and I hope it will never be allowed but Cuomo can technically do that now if he wants, thanks to his emergency powers from earlier this year.

Well if you look above it has been implemented but curious why on earth you would have a problem with this? You need to give consent. Having widespread testing is probably the best way to slow the spread. I can't think of one good reason to object to in school testing with consent.

Yellow Zone?
I would gladly allow my kids to be tested if it helped schools stay open. They’ve been tested, and were totally fine. School nurses are no different from the nurse administering the test at your pediatrician.

If the parent consents, I have no problem with that at all, I have always been one to give the choice to the parent and no one else. But what about if they don’t consent? What then? Will they allow the parent to be present when the test is happening? Will they allow the parent to take the kid to their own dr instead? Will they kick out the kid if the parent doesn’t consent for whatever reason? It seems that they will let the parent know after the kid has been tested.

From what I am seeing i do believe the masks work. Worn correctly with others also wearing masks and distancing. No, if worn under the nose they don't work or if you are all over someone or the other person isn't wearing one it won't work. My kids wear face masks in school and if in a store running errands. We allow outside get togethers only. They have been safe and doing well. From what I have heard when I hear of a covid case it's been inside, close contact for a long amount of time. I know of a few kids who were near someone who later tested positive for Covid. When that child was around others outside and distancing no one else got sick. Masks are working. Just like wearing a seatbelt works in a car. Just follow the rules and quarantine if traveling, don't do indoor gatherings with lots of people in close contact. I'm sorry, but this would be temporary if we just all could comply.

Per our Super, it will not be the school nurse (who the kids know and trust). It will be outside medical personnel.

It was implemented in my district (I’m upstate). As long as they are testing 20% of kids weekly, our schools can remain open. You don’t have to go remote if you opt out, but if they didn’t get at least 20% of the kids to opt in for testing our school would have had to go fully remote. I opted in for my kids and they were both swabbed with a short nasal swab (not the long one) yesterday. They reported the test was “easy” and “good” and was administered by a “nurse helper” (but I’m not sure what that means). I don’t understand the anti-testing sentiment. I’m happy to do my part to keep schools open, and after discussing with my kids and showing them a video of how non-invasive the nasal swab was, they were fine with it. Testing also gives me the added benefit of knowing my kids are not asymptomatic spreaders, which eased my mind about upcoming holiday gatherings with my in-laws.

The short one just enters the nostril and is basically like a q-tip circling the nostril. It doesn’t go “up” the nose like the regular covid exam. I think it is for the rapid test which is typically not as reliable. It is not invasive at all. Basically it goes as far up as you would with your finger.

The short one just enters the nostril and is basically like a q-tip circling the nostril. It doesn’t go “up” the nose like the regular covid exam. I think it is for the rapid test which is typically not as reliable. It is not invasive at all. Basically it goes as far up as you would with your finger.
From what I have heard the rapid is notorious for false negatives so if that's what they are using at school it's a false sense of security

It has been said, but not yet enforced, that the child will have to go remote if the parent doesn't consent.
So you're pretty much being forced to consent. Because remote school is not a viable option that I would ever chose in a million years so yeah.

For wide spread testing, the rapid test is good. While false negatives will occur, with a big enough sample size you can quickly isolate positive cases and then retest close contacts with the PCR test.
We need more testing.
Most schools will be in the yellow zone soon enough and will require this form of testing.

We were just at the pediatrician yesterday (not for covid) and the doctor said the rapid test is 90% accurate.
And yes, he also mentioned false negatives.

For a virus so potent that u even have to keep at least 6 feet away from ppl to avoid catching it, u’d think PCR tests are not needed

Re: Yellow Zone?
I have to agree with this. **disclaimer: I don’t have kids** I am very close with my 2 youngest nieces and my SIL. It’s not looking like these spikes are coming from school. So the idea of shutting school doesn’t make much sense. If it was school causing these spikes because they are all giving it to each other, it wouldn’t be a random staff member and 1 kid from 1 class tested positive etc. that’s what we’ve been seeing around here. Not “the entire middle school is positive”. They are wearing masks in school, socially distant and have the shields around their desks.
It’s the after stuff. The gatherings outside of school. Bday Parties, play dates, etc. that’s where people are tracing things back to.
School shouldn’t be closed again. People need to reign in their after school & work activities to help get it under control again before were all locked in our houses wiping our asses with one square at a time to conserve TP

It definitely is true. There have been 21 cases in our school district and there has been no spread in schools. It's spreading outside of school.
