Re: Yesterday was so far the worst day of being a mom
Ok, this story infuriates me. First of all, my son is not circumsized either and I was given the bags to do a urine culture. What on Earth would they force his foreskin back for and use a catheter, esp. since he had no indication of a UTI??? There wasn't even blood in his urine! I'm so annoyed. I've had my son in the ER with a temp of over 104 and they couldn't find anything visibly wrong with him at first but never said anything about a UTI. I hate doctors. I'm so sorry you and your baby had to go through this. Give him lots of love for me. I'm happy he's feeling better. You're asking the wrong person if you should switch doctors because I've only had my son home since December and I've already switched, so I vote yes. Switch until you feel 100% confident.

Re: Yesterday was so far the worst day of being a mom
I FMd you but wanted to say my son had a UTI and his only sympton was a high fever (104). No pain while urinating and no blood in his urine so it can be possible to have a UTI with only a fever. They took a urine sample with a catheter b/c they told me the bags wouldn't give them a proper uncontaminated sample. They did not retract his entire foreskin though when they did the catheter.
I do agree though that if you and your DH aren't 100% comfortable with your ped you should switch. Good Luck to you and I hope he feels better

Re: Yesterday was so far the worst day of being a mom
Let's say he had a UTI, would you feel better about your doctor?
The reason I ask is ...well it could've been. He has a high fever, no other symptoms, lungs are clear, and in your ped's experience thought it could be a UTI & thought he should get checked. I think any ped could make that mistake. I've switched peds a few times but I probably wouldn't in this case.
As for the LIJ resident - that I would be annoyed with, but not my pediatrician. However both you & DH need to feel comfortable with the doctor.
You're not a bad mom at all. I think with that high a fever, you want assurance that it's a UTI, croup & nothing more serious. He won't remember a thing.
Hope he's feeling better.

You are right that if he did have a UTI then I probably wouldnt be as upset. When I left the dr.s office to go to the ER I was fine with the procedure because I figured it take a the most 5 minutes but then it just seemed like they weren't paying attention when they were doing it. I mean I heard my resident ask one of the doctor's to help him with the procedure and he said to have the nurse help him. That doctor was so cocky and arrogent.

Re: Yesterday was so far the worst day of being a mom
I am sorry you had to go through such an ordeal. I do have to say though, that I'd rather my doctor be more cautions then laxidasical when a high fever were involved. When Emily had her asthma attack a few weeks ago I didn't even think it was entirely necessary to take her to the hospital at first, but I'm so glad that we did because it turned out it was an attack (the doc wasn't even thinking that -- she was thinking broncialitis) and the treatments they gave her helped her 1-2-3.
I do have to say though, I'm not sure about LIJ but when we took Emily to the ER the pediatrician recommended Winthrop. I was going to take her to Plainview LIJ but the doc recommended Winthrow -- saying they were good with kids. It turned out they had a seperate waiting room and an entirely seperate ER for children and babies, and the docs were very well trained for dealing with babies. I don't know if LIJ has this set up also, but for future reference I was very satisfied with Winthrop and couldn't think of taking her anywhere else in the future if we need to take her to the hospital again.
for poor Luca! I hope he is better soon!

Re: Yesterday was so far the worst day of being a mom
We went through somethign similar with Madeline ( well, not the part about being uncircumcised:) She had a high fever, they thought it was a UTI, we took her to LIJ and all the Drs there led us to believe it was very unecessary. If you hadn't said your pedi was a woman, I would have wondered if we had the same Dr. Hope your guy feels better. Don't beat yourself up- you do whatever you need to do when they are sick.

Re: Yesterday was so far the worst day of being a mom
The bag tests IMHO and from my experience are inaccurate. My daughter had one because I seriously thought she had a UTI as an infant. (She might have been 4 months old) They did the bag test for her and it came back positive. They then went on to tell me how rare it was for a young infant to get a UTI and that it's possible that her kidneys were not functioning properly. They sent us some where to have a catherder and die test. The test came back negative, THANKFULLY, and her kidneys were functioning properly. I then had to go back to my doc and they did another UTI check to make sure whatever it was was gone. This time it was negative. The difference between the 2-- the second time they put iodine all over her vagina to make sure that it was sterile and the first time they didn't. I was furious that we put her through this horrible test, though she doesn't remember it and it ruled out something that she can't develop she either had it or she didn't. But I remember her screams. I remember her crying and me crying outside the room since they wouldn't let me in, only my husband.
I will never do another bag test again. I would rather go for a catherder any day. As bad as it sounds at least it is accurate.
I am so sorry that you went through that. But you are not a bad mother. Sometimes we have to do at that moment what we feel is best. Though when we think about it or hear the results we may second guess ourselves and say why did we do that. If the test had come back positive you would be thankful that you did it. So please try to think about the fact that you ruled something out.

You're not a bad mom at all... he had a high fever, and any new mom would take action when their baby has a high fever like that. I hope you and he feel better soon
