Yet another ear piercing question . . .
I have thought that the best place to go to get DD's ears pierced would be the pediatrician. A comment from yesterday made me start thinking- is the pediatrician really the best place to go? Does anyone think that a jeweler would be a better place to go due to perhaps better training?

Re: Yet another ear piercing question . . .
I don't know the answer- but I will say that of the probably 15 doctors at my peds practice, only 2 of them do the piercings so there must be some type of training to it I'm thinking....
My ped did an awesome job, was very professional and I am happy I had it done there
Also,my ped's office will not do the piercings until 6 months because that is when they said the ear lobe stops growing ( or something of that nature), where-as i have heard of piercing booths doing them earlier, so who knows

Interesting about the 6 months. I know (because I signed the release) that Piercing Pagoda at the Mall requires kids have certain vaccines before they pierce. My ped OK'd the earrings at her 2 month well visit/vaccine visit. She said either do it when DD was too young to "notice" or wait until she was old enough to ask for them.

I had tried to have them do Lexi's at her 4 month appointment and they told me that they don't do them until 6 months because of the growth of the earlobe ( for placement reasons)...I have no idea what difference 2 months make when it comes to a baby's earlobe though ( for all I know they were blowing smoke up my @ss)

Re: Yet another ear piercing question . . .
Procedures (of any kind) are a matter of practice. No matter who does it, you have a higher chance of having a successful procedure if the proceduralist has done a lot of the procedure in question.
Currently in pediatrics residency training you do not get training in how to pierce ears. If you found a pediatrician on his/her last day of residency they could spinal tap your kid with their eyes closed, but most likely they've never pierced ears.
Granted a pediatrician out in practice for years who's done a few ears is probably pretty good at it. Also, piercing ears does not seem like the most technically complex procedure (just aim and click) as opposed to some other medical procedures (sewing up wounds, placing a breathing tube) so I'd bet that someone who's done a few sets of ears has probably figured it out pretty quickly.
Bottom line it probably doesn't matter as long as the person has done a lot of ears in the past.
