You guys will enjoy this-taking kids to dinner
Let me preface this by saying-if I took my kids to a nice restaurant(or any restaurant for that matter) and they started crying or in general being annoying, I would immediately remove them. I posted on city-data for some advice on where to take our 1 year old(almost ) twins and whew-did I get BEAT UP! Read if you have the time. I am melijane on that board. Also I updated after we went out on page 2

I loved your response and also the "flair" comment.
And that one person went to an Olive Garden and expected a quiet dining experience? Clearly he had never eaten there before.

Re: You guys will enjoy this-taking kids to dinner
DH and I take our son to really nice restaurants all the time. Granted, he is 7 months old but can be squirmy. We just time it right(around nap schedule) and are sure to go when a restaurant has just opened. We are often the only people there. I want him to grow up knowing there is a certain way to act in a restaurant so that when he is 3 we can continue to take him. If he did act up though I would def take him outside.
ETA: I think you did the right thing!

OMG!! What is there definition of fine dining anyway. I see absolutely nothing wrong with babies at the Outback, Applebees, etc.
Seriously how nasty. You didn't say you were gonna take them to the Ritz.

If they didn't want kids at the restaurant, they wouldn't have highchairs available

Re: You guys will enjoy this-taking kids to dinner
OMG some people are ridiculous! We used to take DS everywhere when he was that age because he was so good. We went to top restaurants in NYC but we'd just plan accordingly with toys and snacks and go around 6pm. Surprisingly even some of the nicest restaurants keep sections for people with kids.
You know your kids so go out and enjoy! I will say at 2, we no longer enjoy that luxury so enjoy it now in case they morph into a restaurant monster like mine did
The Olive Garden comment was

Re: You guys will enjoy this-taking kids to dinner
Thanks for being on my side! Man I thought I would have avoided most of that with the way I asked it but I guess not. Did you see the moderators comment
Anyway-it seemed to be split between people who thought my kids were going to run amok ruining everyone's good time and people who, like us, had taken kids out from an early age. I mean-I wouldn't take my kids to Le Cirque or something(just because we'd want to enjoy the experience without distraction) but I see nothing wrong with going to a steakhouse.

Re: You guys will enjoy this-taking kids to dinner
Sorry but I don't have a problem with children in restaurants even fine dining as long as they are well behaved. It is when the parents let the kids scream, cry and throw things that it isn't appropriate (when they don't remove them). You DO have to know your kids - some can sit for a long time others can't - I personally can't stand when adults get drunk and loud they are much more annoying then an adorable baby or child at another table. Also I believe that if you don't take your child out to eat how will they ever be expected to know how to behave - and I don't think places like McD's is the place to teach them...LOL.
You were totally right. Olive garden is fine dining...maybe not the person I would be taking advice from...

Re: You guys will enjoy this-taking kids to dinner
Wow! But good for you for taking them out and enjoying a nice meal. We have taken our kids with us from day 1.... And they are very well behaved. All 4 of us went out last night to a little Italian restaurant near us and my 5 and 3 year old were so good! And they put their cloth napkins on their lap without even being told too and the waiter was very impressed! Then they proceeed to eat the entire bread basket and ask for more

Re: You guys will enjoy this-taking kids to dinner
I hate when I take my DC out for a nice dinner, and the ADULTS next to us are being loud, obnoxious, on their cell phones, using bad language, making a mess, etc. THEY are the ones who should only be allowed to have take-out, not DC....

That is so cute! That is what we think..if you never take your kids out...how will they learn to behave? We have always enjoyed going to dinner pre children so why not now? Like I said, if they were being at all disruptive I would immediately remove them.

I think the people who don't like children in "nice" places are the ones who couldn't control their kids.

ETA-not to say I can "control" my 1 year olds BUT I make sure I have lots of different toys, I have snacks, I interact with them so they don't get bored. As they get older I plan on having a bag with special activities I will leave in the car just for these sorts of circumstances.

Re: You guys will enjoy this-taking kids to dinner
I am glad you were able to enjoy a nice night out with your children. Like so many AP said, how are they to learn how to act if you keep them holed up until they are adults? We used to take DS1 out with us 2 or 3 nights a week. When we would go to "nice" places like steak houses, Brazilian restaurants, etc, we would get comments from people as they were leaving that they didn't even realize a baby was there! Now, with DS2, it is a whole other ballgame. Unless we have a baby sitter or another adult to walk with him as needed, there is no way I am going out with him! He won't sit in a high chair and is generally sleeping by 6:00 PM

I am not a promoter of kids in "fine" dining.
But I find the comments rather annoying.
I bet some of them are those speaking out loud, I am having my party and I don't care about other dinners type customers.
Well, those customers are just as annoying to me.

Re: You guys will enjoy this-taking kids to dinner
WOW! What *% they are.
Anyway... my parents only like nice restaurants so we go out with them we take DS to a nice restaurant. My Sister has 5 kids and has been taking them to nice places. I'm not a fan of McDonalds or other fast food places so why should I stick to those places.
BTW.. on my nieces or nephews b-days we always ask them where do they want to go to dinner and they always pick a nice restaurant b/c that's where they've been going since they were babies... that's how I'll be with my DS. Sure if he has a fit I'll take him out and if it gets bad then we'll say "we'll take it to go" Some people

I personally don't think it's that so much. I think its that everyone has a different opinion of what "disruptive" or annoying is. It's subjective, what level is acceptable. I dont think it means that these people were ones who could not control their kids. Maybe they controlled plenty, and just dont want to deal with what they "think" may turn into an annoyance.
I am not commenting on my feelings on it, just commenting on this above quote.
