ziti vs. penne
so this may sound silly.
i'm supposed to make baked ziti for a large gathering tomorrow.
i got all my ingredients and will be making it tonight. i'm a bit nervous as some of the people are very critical of food and consider themselves master cooks.
so my DH pointed out that I bought penne and NOT ziti. as far as i'm concerned they are one and the same (one has ridges one does not)
do you think anyone will mind?
can i still call it baked ziti? (if not, what would you call it)

I actually like it better with penne- it has a more interesting texture.

I also prefer it with penne.
All the hardcore Italians I know never say "baked ziti" anyway, they say "baked macaroni" (even when it's made with ziti or penne shaped pasta) so you could say that and if they question it, just say that it's the authentic way that Italian-Americans call it!
They can stick that in their master cook pipe and smoke it!

Yes, it is not Ziti as Baked Ziti is named... but most Italian places do use Penne. I like it better with Penne usually. It doesn't make a difference. Either one tastes/works the same.
ETA: I would call it baked ziti... or call it baked penne...

I like penne better.
I make my baked ziti with rigatoni too sometimes. It comes out soooooo good and holds so much yummy cheese inside the pasta.

Interesting. I'm 100% Italian and I've never called it baked macaroni. We grew up calling it baked ziti........or even just ziti, the baked part is always implied........and even if you use different pasta, it's still baked ziti. lolol

My family is off the boat Sicilian. Nonna switches it up between penne, ziti, rigatoni all the time! I wouldn't worry about it. Like others, I prefer the penne. I've even made it before with cavatappi, still delish!

This!
I had a whole rant on fb about how ziti is the worst macaroni. Doesn't hold the sauce on the outside, gets all slimed, and it fills up inside and squirts in your mouth. Yuck!
I make it with rigatoni.
