I’m so confused as to what’s happening here. Not to dredge up the old beef but in the beginning poster Lululu practically reamed me a new a-hole for telling someone it’s ok to take their kid to the park. Was mad at me for wanting to workout. So when did she become the callous person who doesn’t care about virus. Im not one to defend her, but I think people are taking her post on the “concerned” thread out of context. I took it as a matter of factly, trying to calm the OP down, like many of us were trying to do.
I was attacked and insulted by her too a while back-unprovoked. I didn't get it because it should have been a civilized discussion and she literally knows nothing about me personally. I chalked it up to something that's about her and how she deals with people?

Her choice of wording was the issue.
Not sugar coating it, a bit harsh...maybe but nothing compared to the choice of words some ppl in this forum tend to use towards others.
Doesn't change the fact how it came off to some as a rude and inconsiderate comment.

I’m soooo curious to see if this just disappears after the election. Just like swine flu ran it’s course in the media, Ebola, etc... sadly I’m hoping this is just political and not a “new normal” bc I can’t live like this any longer
Are you being serious?
Well you are lucky none of your family members have had this. Have you heard of Nick Cordero? Do you pick up a newspaper and read it? 10,000 new cases PER day in Florida. They had to reclose all the beaches and restaurants. Because people like you aren't taking this seriously. It's not political. It's a GLOBAL pandemic. It's not going to "disappear" until people wear masks or stay home.
Where do you get your news from? Google FL Corona. Numbers are high but not that high.
From reputable news sources in Florida
https://www.wfla.com/community/health/coronavirus/florida-coronavirus-state-sees-nearly-10000-covid-19-cases-in-largest-testing-day-yet/
Not saying that the numbers in Florida are insignificant but, there were nearly 10,000 on one day - the day of the article... It's not 10,000 new cases per day.
Hm.... since we were having this conversation many days were over 10,000 cases PER DAY in Florida.
July 4th - over 11,000 July 5th - over 10,000 July 10th - over 11,000 July 11th - over 10,000 TODAY - OVER 15,000 cases The average per day TOTAL since March is about 10,000. So yeah, ok. Try to tell me that isn't true...
and most importantly, let's remember this is only the people going out and getting tested. Many people are still being denied testing or just staying at home sick and not going out to get tested.

I think that we are missing the point. The point of staying home was to mitigate and reduce hospital overload. As long as that doesn't happen (and it never really, even at its worst in NY), then the kids need to go back to school. Coronavirus will not be going magically away. People will continue to get sick for the next year and a half. Why should we want to keep kids home and accept substandard remote learning for them? Risk vs. benefit.

Those numbers are crazy. To think people would actually want to o to Disney is absurd. I cant believe they are open.

Serious question about these numbers:
When NY was hitting 10,000 cases per day we were seeing about 800 deaths per day. But FL is still reporting less than 100 deaths per day. Why such a difference between cases vs deaths compared with NY?
(I’m trying to find per day hospitalizations for NY vs FL and haven’t found it yet.)

My guess is they know more about it so have better treatment available now = less death. As per my FIL, who has friends who are Drs and Nurses in FL., the hospitals aren’t overrun (where ever they are) so maybe PCPs are giving scripts of steroid and possible anti malaria drugs and it isn’t getting to that extreme for most people anymore ?

Also- by using another therapy with forced oxygen rather than putting patients on ventilators may have helped.
And more young people are getting the virus, so they have a better chance of survival. Elderly and those compromised are probably more careful about their potential exposure- which didn't happen in NY in the early days. Nursing home deaths also added to the total.

I think treatments have improved and they've said younger people are making up a bigger chunk of the cases. However, with 10-15k cases a day right now, hospitalizations will go up in a week or two, and deaths will go up a week or two after that. Hopefully what they've learned in recent months helps but I do think we're just at the beginning when it comes to hospitalizations and deaths in these hot spots.

While the number look scary, without more information they really don't give a complete picture. What percentage of them are asymptomatic vs symptomatic? How may need a hospital stay and what is the actual death rate without counting deaths from other causes who happen to Covid? People get tested multiple times, so I assume the number include duplicate and not only new positives. Sadly, I don't think we will ever get the truth. The media will find headline that made money and then find the stats to support it.

This. I also think it’s more widespread infection. In NY, it was really concentrated in the metro area. The hospitals were overwhelmed. I’m upstate and while we had cases, it was nowhere near the level of downstate.

Many people answered already, but in my opinion I think this is for a few reasons. NY was at the beginning when they knew a lot less about covid. Now they know which treatment methods work and which do not. They try to ventilate less, if they are ventilated to turn patients over. They know which medications do and don't seem to help as much. Another reason is it was originally affecting mostly the older population. The age of those it is hurting has now averaged 20 years younger they said. So if the average age of those being affected was let's say 70 (I have no idea if this is true) that would be the new average to age 50 and maybe a 50 year old would have a better chance to not succumb to the worst fate. Plus many reports are stating Florida as well as other states have been understating deaths - attributing it to other factors or just leaving them off. I think eventually it will get corrected? I don't know how that works. Plus deaths lag behind numbers, so the death count could possibly increase in a few weeks after the hospitals are swamped and patients have been suffering in there for more than a few weeks.

But that's not true for other hospitals in Florida...

I also think the death rate isn't as high now as more people are being tested. In NY, in the beginning, most of those who were tested were really sick. Now people are being tested for a myriad of reasons (to return to work, before elective surgeries, etc) so you see a lot more asymptomatic positives than you did when we were in the thick of it here.

This has always perplexed me. Murphy and Cuomo open up testing, pleads with everyone that they need to get tested for accurate data, help with the vaccine and to treat it better. Makes perfect sense to me. However, since now everyone is getting tested, Ofcourse the number of cases are going to go up. So why do they use that against us or as an excuse to slow down or stop opening things back up? Murphy keep delaying things and uses the #s going up as an part of his excuse.
Idk I’m just tired of contradictions and hypocritical ness of these decisions.

Disney is open because it's a business. MONEY. If you go there, you know you are are being majorly risky.
Florida reported a single day increase of 15k cases.

Totally agree. And the more positives we’re finding, the lower the death rate actually is. And we’re learning how many people are asymptomatic or have only mild symptoms who are only being diagnosed because of increased testing. This should be good news, but of course it’s being turned into doom and gloom.

Idk I’m just tired of contradictions and hypocritical ness of these decisions.
Totally agree. And the more positives we’re finding, the lower the death rate actually is. And we’re learning how many people are asymptomatic or have only mild symptoms who are only being diagnosed because of increased testing. This should be good news, but of course it’s being turned into doom and gloom.
This makes it more clear how much politics plays a role in the response.

Re: Cuomo says he wants schools to reopen in September, and that is currently the plan
I guess I am the outlier in this thread but I don't really see why politics has a role here, this is a public health crisis - not a political crisis (despite what either Dem/GOP wants to claim). The RESPONSE to this public health crisis across different countries is causing a political backlash- and we are seeing that in many countries in Asia, Europe and Latin America. The US clearly failed this test as we can see just from the numbers.
As to why the increase in positive cases causing more restrictions, I am not sure why people immediately look at lockdowns and restrictions as some type of political overreach. What alarms me is that we are testing more people and so many of these people have NO symptoms and are clearly contributing to the spread.
Cuomo just had Mayor Bottoms from Atlanta on his briefing earlier today and she flat out said "my child had the virus for 8 days and had no symptoms and clearly gave it to me and my husband". This is alarming, and as a country we simply do NOT have the testing and tracing capacities up to speed to really control the spread and until then, our only tools are masks and social distancing. Thats just science, not politics. But thats just my opinion.

I've heard from a lot of teachers that it seems a hybrid schedule is most likely. Which is difficult for many, including teachers with children who are expected to be at school every day.

Just hope people will stop traveling to hot spots and coming back. We wanted to away, but all the places we wanted to go have high numbers, so we decided it is not worth the risk.

Yeah I'm curious what schools open actually means. Will schools be able to follow the guidelines without going with a hybrid schedule? Doubt it.

Parents ... plan for remote schooling. Worst case, you don’t need it. But from what I’m hearing, schools are preparing for 3 scenarios. Full in person school, part time remote/part time in person or full remote. And this can happen at the drop of a dime (or a few cases of covid pops up in a school)
You don’t want to leave yourself screwed. Line up relatives or neighbors who can help. Start checking care.com for availability. Have a plan. Because My fear for you guys - it’ll be a shit show

I agree - there is no way the schools can open normally under the COVID restrictions put in place.
