Re: Christmas Eve food

I was just thinking about this. My cousin usually has a big crowd and does the traditional 7 fishes routine but not this year.

I think I'm going to try to replicate the fish theme into something more tailored to my household, so right now I have baked cod, fried shrimp, and stuffed clams, but that's just early brainstorming at this point.

Dessert is mostly tons of cookies but I have a cheesecake recipe I might try.

Apps are usually a big antipasto spread - cheeses, cured meats, roasted peppers, etc. - but if it's just us I'm not sure because I am the only one in my household who really eats that stuff.

Covid totally suckks!

Re: Christmas Eve food

We stay home on Christmas eve and eat pizza and calzones. My daughter and I bake cookies for Santa.
Christmas day is the big holiday with my family.

I know -holidays are the best time to eat things that I don't want to make & that my husband doesn'' eat.
We usually spend Christmas Eve alone, so we just make fondue, but we usually go to a friend's for New Years-so I am trying to figure out how many appetizers I can get away with for just 2 people

Christmas Eve food

We do fishes but it will be pared down as there is only 6 of us instead of 30. We'll have baked clams, crab legs, zuppa di pesce (I order from uncle Gs) and linguine, fried shrimp, baked flounder, broccoli salad, maybe some calamari. For apps we do an antipasti platter.

I posted this answer back in 2018....

Our Christmas Eve is a little out of the ordinary.
I am Catholic and DH is Jewish.
Growing up, Christmas Eve at my house was for last minute wrapping of presents, preparing the food for the next day and Midnight Mass.
We were all about Christmas Day (Breakfast, Presents, Relatives, Dinner) so it was easy to start spending Christmas Eve with my in-laws and keep Christmas day for my family celebration.
That being said....we have a Jewish Christmas Eve....catering in from Ben's....corned beef,
pastrami,specials,potato knishes,pickles,cole slaw,beans,rye bread etc....and matzo ball soup !!!

We normally have a pretty big family gathering with Italian food and lots of appetizers. We will prob order in this year since it will just be the 4 of us. Not sure on apps but maybe can do instead of lunch and have an earlier dinner.

Still deciding on Christmas Day but I will prob make lamb.

This all makes me sad but I will make the best of it for my kids. It will be ok, just different.

Christmas Eve food

All kinds of fish in much smaller quantities since it is only 10 of us instead of 25. Typically seafood salad, baked clams, calamari and octopus. Then, pasta with clams, mussels, scungilli, lobster and king crab. Then baccala`, stuffed shrimp, scallops wrapped in bacon and sometimes flounder or halibut. Lots of veggies and roasted potatoes etc.
This year, it will probably be this but in a tiny quantity.

No clue as it seems all up in the air right now. I usually do Christmas Eve, just dinner with some family. Christmas Day a few more extended family at someone else’s house.

I am fine doing it but the others might not so I wait and see.

Hm.... I grew up with either the Italian 7 fishes for Christmas eve (baked clams, crab salad, crabcakes, shrimp cocktail, calamari, lobster, things with anchovies, shrimp scampi, mussels, and of course pasta... yum yum...) or the Jewish Christmas Eve (CHINESE FOOD! YUM!)... but with my inlaws, we always do pierogies, kielbasa, mashed potatoes, yams and apples, cabbage coleslaw and rye bread. Dessert is usually apple pie and pumpkin pie or maybe a cheesecake. some christmas cookies.

Christmas Eve food

We do potluck apps both days—no sit down meal. This way nobody is in the kitchen cooking/washing dishes and everyone can mingle and socialize the whole time. It works out great!

Christmas Eve food

My family usually have a huge 50 person Italian gathering with my whole family and lots of family friends. It's been a tradition since my grandparents came over from Italy in the 1950s. It's sad, but obviously, we aren't having that this year. We will be with my parents & possibly sister & her husband (8 people) and keeping the Italian fish theme- we're thinking Shrimp & crab cocktail, zuppe di Pesce over linguine, fried shrimp & fried calamari, plus a cold cod salad (bacala). Veggies and salad. We don't eat any meat on christmas eve.

That's so funny. DH is 100% Italian and every Christmas Eve his mom would do the fishes and would have to order pizza and calzone for him and his 1 sister who refused to eat fish.
That is where our pizza and calzone on Christmas Eve tradition came from. LOL

Funny thing is, now that he is older, he loves fish. Once he started his new way of eating he decided to try fish because it fit well with how he eats and now he loves it and even eats sushi.
But yeah, back in the day, he wouldn't eat a bite of anything from the sea!

Wha? What does any of this even mean? I don't understand any of these words! I will fight anyone over the fishes. I will literally throw down with uncle Frank if he thinks he's eating the last Cbristmas shrimp Chat Icon but maybe that's just my fuked up family lol we all become fighting Irish leprechauns in the front yard on Italian Christmas Eve.

Same, our little family never did the fishes with the rest of the family. We never really did anything for Xmas eve. Now I have been a host so we could have a quieter time to give the kids gifts as Xmas day is more people and it can be chaotic with gift giving. New traditions for my own family.
