Daycare/school fever policy
My daughter was sent home an hour early yesterday with a fever of 100.4. I was told she had to be “fever free” for 48 hours to return. Is it me or is this insane? She’s not even sick and those electronic thermometers are wildly inaccurate. How do parents work? What’s your school/daycare policy?

Daycare/school fever policy
Our policy is a fever is over 100.5 and they have to be 24 hours fever free without fever reducing medications (ie - you can't just give them Motrin and send them).

Daycare and school was always 24 hour fever free.
Maybe with covid they moved it to 48 hours fever free?
ETA : regarding work if I could work from
Home I did/do or my husband would take off or i would take off if for some reason I couldn’t work from Home

I’m not quite sure of our fever “number” but we also have the 24 hour fever free without meds policy.

when my kids were in daycare it was always 24 hours for fever or diarrhea. ALL my days went to my kids from 3 months old to the end of elementary school when they were able to stay home alone.

What used to kill me at daycare was how inaccurate their thermometer's were.
DD once got sent home with 100 point something fever.
Took her to the doctor right after i picked her up and it was 98.6.
You'd think they'd have more accurate thermometers.
It was maddening

LOL. Our school nurse is the same (the elementary school one). The middle school one is a bit more discriminatory as to what merits parental contact.
The elementary one called me the other day since DS was complaining of a sore throat and said he had been in multiple times that day. I was surprised as a sore throat is usually a ticket straight home, even before Covid. I asked him and he said he only went once.

It was always fever free for 24 hours without the help of a fever reducer.
But if it was something contagious like strep, they needed to be on meds for 48 hours to return.
If you think their reading is inaccurate make them re-do it before you take your child home next time.

Since covid the policy is 48 hours. If you had kids in daycare years ago, it's very different now.
If you keep your kids home for any reason you need a doctors note to return. You can't send them with a minor cold without getting a covid test. It's so stressful as a working mom. Not to mention a copay every time they have a runny nose.

I ended up calling the nurse and having a 20 minute conversation with her regarding my daughter's bowel habits and her anxiety.
I finally convinced her it was nothing major and she was fine a few hours.

Mental health day is a good one to say. Or just tell them you feel like playing hooky for a day.

Last year we took them out of school twice - once to go to Hershey, and once to Kalahari. It was nice to say sorry, they won't be in, we are going to Pennsylvania lol. Since going to Pennsylvania was more acceptable than saying he is tired or has a stuffy nose.

I don’t think it’s that big of a deal. Just say you have a family member visiting. Taking a day trip. Going to an appointment.
