Something needs to be done about mental health. Everyone should be entitled to a 6 month psychological checkup as part of their routine healthcare. The world is so different now and so many people are not ok or handling life well. I already notice my tween is a mental case and I can’t believe what my insurance wants me to pay to have her go talk to someone! We need more affordable/free access to mental health related things.

My heart breaks for those families. I just can’t even imagine.

Yep. NY has some of the strictest gun laws in the country and look what happened in Buffalo
So something is definitely not working

I’m not looking to debate guns. Honestly I’m not a “gun person”. Don’t understand why people collect them and stuff.

We have a HUGE mental health issue right now. HUGE. the last couple years took a toll on everyone. And even today with Covid restrictions lifting there are new issues. I have a friend who is unwinding because they barely have their head above water financially….he’s close to losing it. We need to tackle mental health!!!!!!

Just don’t know what to say anymore. Will we ever find the answer? I feel like it’s a chicken vs egg thing. Is it mental health or the gun laws? Should we bring back the asylums or more restrictive gun laws? My heart goes to the families, I really can’t fathom it. Make sure to keep your loved ones close as you just never know when your number is up…

Re: Another school shooting

Just wanted to add on the mental Heath points being brought up. I have been looking for a therapist for over a year now. Going on almost 2 tbh, and nobody I have contacted is taking new patients. I recheck every few months. I’ve contacted over 20 places. They all say the same thing - that since covid, they are bombarded and they wish they could help me. Thank goodness I’m not on the edge and I’m just looking for regular therapy - it’s impossible to get help

PS I just sent my SIL a link for bullet proof panels to buy for her kids backpacks. $97. Worth it

I agree. But I feel there is no need for assault rifles, other than in the military, which has been the weapon used in many of these mass shootings.

Re: Another school shooting

Other first world countries have the same mental health issues.  (And while their health care systems are otherwise superior to ours, they tend to have similar deficiencies in treating mental health.)  But they don't have shootings like we do.  It's clear the difference is the guns.
I don't mind talking about mental health in proportion to the actual impact it has on the situation because it certainly plays a role.  But when gun rights advocates use it as a smokescreen to deflect from the real issue, they lose me.
There is no physical barrier between states which is why we need federal legislation for universal background checks at a minimum and other common sense measures supported by the majority of Americans.  But this is part of a bigger pattern in which we are held hostage by a fringe minority due to the structure of our government which is creating a situation where the government does not reflect the actual interests of the people.  It was always the goal of Movement Conservativism and the Southern Strategy.  We are feeling it now in many ways.  If they aren't stopped ASAP, those people will in fact destroy this country.
The only panacea for me is action.  I will just have to work even harder to elect people who refuse NRA money and are willing to end the filibuster if necessary to enact sensible gun control.  All the money, all the canvassing, all the text banking, all the work to get these assholes out of office. I'll do whatever it takes.

The US as a whole has literally done NOTHING in terms of gun control. Guns are the issue. Mental illness alone does not cause these shootings. Access to guns do. PERIOD.

Re: Another school shooting

Agree that other FW countries have similar mental illness etc. there is a difference in the upbringing of each generation though. No consequences can be a big part of irrational behavior. America is very lenient on criminal behavior (most all of these maniacs have prior issues known to school/law enforcement) and nothing is done not to infringe on their rights as Americans.

It’s more than gun control. It’s all of it rolled Into one big ball of horror.

Stricter gun laws 100000%. Background checks and psych evaluation at least yearly isn’t a lot of ask. As a household who owns firearms, we would have zero problem with this. Will this help illegal guns? No. But I believe it can help in some way.

Better mental health. Gov’t funded would be great. Because not all therapists take insurance and I know I don’t have $100 to give 2x a week for help, I doubt many avg people do.

If you’re a parent of a child who is obviously harboring criminal behavior / thoughts, etc- act now before that child hurts others. That’s a big one too. You have to admit families tend you try to protect their family members from being labeled as unstable but if they are, they are! Stop them before carnage ensues. But then where do you go for help if there is no help

I would be in favor of arming the security guards at our schools. This way they can intervene if something does happen. Many security guards are retired cops.

This. I don’t understand how the focus in the media is guns, guns, guns but rarely even say anything about mental issues. While I believe there should be regulations about guns (they shouldn’t be easy to obtain), let’s be honest, guns don’t shoot themselves. If someone has the motive to kill and use guns for it, they’ll find them whether they’re legal or not, whether they wanna use a gun or something else. The main focus should be placed in addressing this rapidly growing mental issue, which was already happening in great numbers even before Covid. What’s causing these mental illnesses and how to help people in different ways.

Another school shooting

We need gun control, plain and simple. It is absolutely criminal now and every single politician who votes down gun control should be personally responsible.

Mental health is a huge issue but will not solve the gun problem. Most likely these lunatics that do mass shootings would not be looking for mental health resources. I do believe that schools should have a much more robust mental health component in them but that would need funding from the federal or state goverments because districts do not have the money to cover all the students adequately.

I can't bear the thought of what these children and parents went through. It is sickening.

My take on this is that gun control and mental health are dead issues. Nobody is willing to budge, nothing has been done and nothing will be done so we need to take different angles to alleviate the problem.

1. Every time this happens, the shooter is always described as angry, reclusive, weird, etc. Schools (and work places) should have a mandatory reporting requirement of these behaviors and put these individuals on a list where they closely monitor their social media, etc. Report them to authorities who have a task force designed to monitor these people on social media and attempts to purchase items that could be used for these events. You know the Do Not Fly list? Make a Do Not Sell Weapons list and put them on it. They buy body armor, go investigate. Will some people unfairly make the list? Probably but I don't think that is as big of a problem as 19 dead children in a classroom for the second time in 10 years.

2. Let's remove the stigma from suicide and make it more of a responsible endeavor. These terrorists have a death wish, right? This sounds crass but what can we do to encourage them to just go kill themselves and leave all the innocent people alone? Places like Japan have a high tolerance to suicide and almost have a respect for those who do it. Why not adopt that attitude? You are miserable and full of hate and decide to end it all on your own without killing 22 people in a school building? Great, you are a hero.

Tom Brady earns $52 million to throw a football and the Kardashians literally earn billions of dollars to do nothing. Maybe if we can get people like them to adopt a hashtag like #savelivesjustkillyourself we can make some progress. Maybe Kravis can tatoo it on their faces.

I admit it's a twisted way to think but something has to happen. This can not happen again.

I kinda agree! Every time this happens, the shooter ends up killing himself. I alway say to myself "Why didn't he just do that first?!"
