personally never on the counter unless I'm using it. My friend from the south use to leave it out like that. Even on the of cooking channels they say you can leave it out. I worry about illness...

I don't but I have heard you can. I would be fine with it out but I feel like once you refrigerate something it needs to stay refrigerated.

They have butter bells, but that’s way too dangerous for me. I’d eat much more butter than I like. I now keep butter in the freezer and take off what I need. This has greatly reduced my butter intake.

I never heard of leaving it out. That’s interesting. I’ve always kept it in the fridge.

My husbands family in the Midwest does leave it out, but it goes in a special container made for countertop butter. You fill it with some water and it keeps it soft.

My friend in NH leaves out her butter. We put it in the fridge but take it out for a bit whenever we want to use it for anything other than cooking.

Re: on butter: do you leave it on the counter?
Growing up, we always left a stick of butter on the counter in one of those holders. We're still kicking. My mom still does.
As an adult, I don't, but mostly because I find that unless it's winter time the butter actually gets TOO soft. I buy regular sticks of butter for cooking/baking/measuring purposes and keep it in the fridge, but I also buy this tub of butter (real butter, not margarine and not whipped- I don't like either) which stays soft and spreadable even in the fridge.

Re: on butter: do you leave it on the counter?
We leave our butter out all the time.
we have a rubbermaid butter dish and use that.
The kids use butter on toast and bagels frequently and we go through it. Never had an issue.
we have central AC, so its never super duper hot. Makes it sooo much easier to spread.
if we are going away or not using for a while, we would refrigerate.

Re: on butter: do you leave it on the counter?
They sell butter crocks for leaving butter on the counter so it's always easily spreadable for bread. It creates a seal with water to keep the butter fresh. You change the water out every couple of days. When the weather is hot you can add ice chips in the water to keep the butter from melting and spilling into the water.

My dad used to do this!
I keep the butter in the fridge now. We almost never spread butter on anything. It’s used almost exclusively to make boxed Annie’s Mac and cheese. Occasionally for baking or cooking.
