Spin-off: playing with neighborhood kids
I’ll preface this by saying, I do not live on LI. I live in a suburban area upstate which is equivalent to western Suffolk.
My sister lives in Nassau County and she says no kids in her neighborhood play together. Her kids go to catholic school so I think that factors into this equation as her kids don’t know the neighborhood kids.
My neighborhood has multiple kids congregating at each other houses at all times. I came home from Target yesterday and there are 4 bikes in my driveway. They then went to another friend’s house and picked up 3 more kids. Kids are riding their bikes everywhere. Playing in backyards, front yards, etc.
Do others live in towns like mine? Or are most like my sister’s?

Spin-off: playing with neighborhood kids
I live in Rockland and the kids in the neighborhood play together. My younger son has a number of boys his age close by and my older son played with the older boys in the neighborhood when he was younger (now hes older and can travel farther so he plays more with his school friends).

Re: Spin-off: playing with neighborhood kids
There are groups of kids who ride their bikes around by me. 2 houses by me have younger kids (middle and elementary school) and they always have friends over playing in the pool and such.

Yes, I see kids playing together in my neighborhood. I do think going to Catholic school makes a difference because the kids are coming from all over, so they may not necessarily live close to eachother. Does your sister not see ANY kids playing together outside, or is it just her kids?

She claims she sees no neighborhood kids out ever. She knows kids do live in her neighborhood. Two families that go to the same catholic school - in the same grade - live in her neighborhood.
I went to catholic school and had a decent number of neighborhood friends growing up in the same town she currently lives in. I will say her street is not good for playing in the front yard. It is a side street but seems to get a lot of traffic. That might factor into it too.

Re: Spin-off: playing with neighborhood kids
I see kids playing together in my neighborhood by my daughter never really did She has one good friend who lives down the block but most of her friends from school live in other neighborhoods.. So to hang out with them we drive her there or they come here. Now that she's a teen it's more like we drive the to the mall or the movies...
I never really made any mom friends in the neighborhood because I worked full time and I am very introverted. Not sure if that made a difference

I am introverted and not friends with the other moms - lol. My son is just SO extroverted and am only child so he is always seeking out people to play with.

in our neighborhood if the kids live near each other they are always back and forth. We are lucky on my block there are several kids in the same age group and they are always playing.

I guess it depends on the block and who lives there. I guess there are not a lot of kids on my block and if there are, they don't play together.

My neighborhood is like yours. I am in Western Nassau. But there are other neighborhoods in my town that are not like that, i think mostly because they are very hilly and it's not as safe to let your kid ride their bike or walk at a young age.

My kids play with other kids in the neighborhood, in both our current neighborhood and where we lived previously

Spin-off: playing with neighborhood kids
There are some boys (maybe middle school aged) who fish around the pond and stream near my house. Other than that, I’ve never seen kids playing outside but there must be some because there are always a lot of complaints about kids riding bikes on the local FB page.

Same. Ours is a pretty self contained neighborhood but kids are always house hopping.
