Need puppy training advice
I'll also post this on the pets page, but this page seems to be more active.
DH and I have a 15 week old puppy. We got him at 8 weeks and have been trying to house train him. FOr a few weeks he seemed to be getting it but going to the door about 2 out of 4 times to go outside. HOwever, this week he has not been going to the door and he has been peeing in the house. DH is so frustrated (and has almost no patients) and I am loosing my patients with DH! I try to take him outside as much as possible, but he still seems to be peeing on the floor. Any advice???

Here are two things that worked for me.
1. attach a bell on a string to your door (the one you take him when he has to go). Each time you take him out ring the bell. In no time at all (seriously this works.. it is amazing) the dog will ring the bell when he has to go out. My dog, my brothers puppy (and in turn my mom's 15 year old dog, because they live with the new puppy) learned this trick in like 2 days. That way puppy has a way to tell you he needs to go out... and puppy won't scratch at your door.
2. The other thing is I take her out everytime she eats right away. That seemed to help...
But I think 15 weeks ( you may have to check on the exact age of this period.. i am not sure) is the adolescence period where they try to push the limits..... This could be it too... My dog did all sorts of crazy things during what the trainer called the "teenage years"...lol
But most puppies I know are not fully trained until at least six months and they have accidents all they way up to that point.

When he goes on the floor you have to bring him over to the mess and put his face right near it and tell him "NO" in a very stearn and mean way. He has to learn that outside is good and inside is bad.

The only thing wth this is that it says everywhere that you can only tell him "NO" and point to the mess when you catch them doing it. After like 10 seconds they won't know what they are getting yelled at for. So, we try to keep a close eye on him but sometimes we miss it.

Take him out every 30 minutes - regardless of whether or not he goes to the door. When he does 'his thing', praise him repeatedly. He'll ultimately attribute the praise to going outside. It takes time and lots of patience.
Also, contrary to some opinions, crating works great for house training.

Also this worked with my dogs. I have 2. Pick them up mid pee do not let them completely pee on the floor. They will stop when you pick them up. When you pick him up say No in a stern voice. Then take him outside and you will probably see him pee again. Say Good boy. Get ridiculously excited, pet him.

BUT NEVER SCOULD HIM UNLESS YOU CATCH HIM IN THE ACT!
Telling him no after the fact is WRONG and will not work!!!!!!!!!!

Every book and trainer out there will tell you NOT to do this EVER.

Unfortunately you cant let him out of your sight if you dont want him going in the house. Take him out every half hour or hour if thats what it takes!! When hes in the house... keep him on a leash near you, or gated off in a kitchen maybe. Make sure you take him on a LONG walk (half hour) once a day at least. Bring treats out and reward him when he goes.
Oh also, I read this in a book: If you take a puppy right in the house after peeing, they may not want to pee in the yard if they think they will have to got right inside (PLAY TIMES OVER?). So after he goes outside, stay out and play fetch or run around for a few min.
Good luck... try not to loose patient, hes just a puppy and hes NOT doing it to spite you... he just doesnt understand yet.
I also agree with if you dont catch him in the act... he has NO idea what hes being yelled at for, so dont bother rubbing his nose it it of whatever else... it will only confuse him more.

That's totally the wrong way...the dog won't know what's "bad." he'll think that going to the bathroom is bad and not relate it to going in the house.
Have to stop the dog in its tracks and take the dog outside as soon as you see it doing something inside and praise it outside while letting them know that in the house is unacceptable.

I had to crate my dog to get her to train she was good with going on the wee wee pads but had a hard time understanding the outside until I crated. 6 months is the point were they really start to understand everything before that need lots of reassurance becase he might not fully understand what he's learning constently praise him when he goes outside. Also if he starts to go in the house and you catch him pick him up and run him outside so he understands that's were he goes. Good luck try not to get too frustrated it's hard when there little.

This will not always work if you do not catch the dog in he was about the act. What are you using to clean after the dog goes? Urine leaves a very small amount of ammonia behind that we cannot smell but the dog can. If the dog can smell the urine then it will think that it is OK to go there again. Try something like "Nature's Miracle to" to get all of the smell out of the carpet or off the floor.
Also the suggestion with the bell also works well. My mother did this with her Japanese Chin & he has been doing this since he was about 14 weeks.
