Re: debate: Dogs at restuarants

If its a dog just laying there I could care less. If its a yappy barking dog or a big dog making me nervous I would ask for a different table.

Re: debate: Dogs at restuarants

Outside, I don't have a problem.

In fact, when I was in Venice, I found that this is VERY popular there! Many restaurants even have a "house" dog - it was sweet.

Question to the girls that are totally against dogs in restaurants.. what do you think about people with seeing eye dogs in restaurants??? Chat Icon

I don't have a problem with that -- Service dogs are (for very good reason) allowed plenty of places pets aren't.

To be honest, though, I've never once seen a seeing eye dog in a restaurant.

i have. when i waitressed a woman had her seeing eye dog with her. huge dog. i got in trouble cuz i went ot pet him. i didnt know you werent allowed to touch sight dogs. i was young. oops.

outside, absolutely fine.

inside, not appropriate.

Why the distinction? You're still at a group of tables where food is being served...

nah, its totally different. the environment is so opposite. youre not sitting on top of other tables, and youre exposed to ALOT more outside.

It doesn't bother me and I brought our Yorkie to plenty of outside restaurants in Manhattan.

my initial reaction is No, they shouldnt be there while people are eating. But, in that specific area, people are always walking their dogs right by the tables as they pass by anyway, so I dont think there's a big difference between having a dog with you while youre sitting outside and sitting outside while someone passes by with their dog.

Depends on the place I guess. We take the girls (dogs) to the pizza place and sit outside with them all the time.

as much as i LOVE my dog he does not belong near a restaurant.

I agree...it is NOT sanitary, but maybe outside is ok

I have! Every summer we had the same guy come back to the restaurant all the time with his seeing eye dog.

Honestly it doesn't bother me if the dog is behaved and it is outside. However i know many people who are afraid of dogs so it doesn't seem quite fair to them.

If it's outside and the dog is well behaved it wouldn't bother me

But, I can see why it would bother people

Re: debate: Dogs at restaurants

I don't have a problem with a well behaved dog outside at a restaurant. One that's barking and jumping around is a different story though. We bring our dog with us to restaurants that allow it. Not all outdoor restaurants do though and we respect the rules of the establishment.

We go up to New Paltz a lot and a lot of the outside restaurants are extremely dog friendly and even bring out water bowls with ice for the dogs. Charlie just sits under one of our chairs and naps.

Re: debate: Dogs at restuarants

Their are actually some restaurants near my office that are "dog friendly". You have to sit outside with the dog though.

As long as it's outside and a well behaved dog I dont see any problems with it. I know I couldnt take my dog because he'll see another dog and want to run around and play. But if it's a well behaved dog, that is just sitting there soaking up the sun I have no problem with it.

Same here. I actually look forward to going to Fire Island in the summer and meeting all the dogs outside the restuarants .

i see this as different because it's not a pet, it's a necessity. they have every right to have their dog with them at all times...including restaurants and stores. i wouldn't have a problem bringing DH (who's highly allergic) to another restaurant without complaint if a seeing eye dog was there.

but it's completely inappropriate for us to have to move tables or go to another restaurant because people want to bring their dogs

You might be exposed to some more, but you're still sitting in a group of tables where food is being served.

The tables outdoors at most restaurants aren't any farther apart than the tables indoors...

but some palces make the dog sit on the opposite side of the partition.

and it depends on the place i guess in relation to how close the tables are inside and out. i know places that the seats are further apart outside.

ok, but you are still choosing to eat at a place that allows dogs. that is your choice.

i don't count a service dog being with a blind person as just being a dog. they have a serious job to do and any restaurant shouldn't deny a customer because they are blind. so no, i disagree.

Re: debate: Dogs at restuarants

Outside's fine. I think the person serving and those cooking the food are sometimes dirtier than a dog can ever be. I mean, you can be smart about it, and if your dog constantly sheds gross hair, leave the dog home. If not who cares?

i'm not talking about service dogs. i htink EVERYONE can agree that sight dogs are allowed everywhere.

i am talking about pet dogs.

and by AT i dont mean IN.

i mean, you go to lunch and you have your dog. you sit OUTSIDE with the dog tethered to your chair.

not inside the restaurant.

how do we all feel about this?

It's a NYC thing...

I don't think people in long island would necessarily get that it's a standard NYC practice...

I have no problem with dogs at outside cafes. As much as I love my furbabies, I don't think they belong inside. I've seen this lots in the city but I agree with the OP that this does not happen in most places on LI.

Outside, yes
Inside, no

Inside it isn't fair for the patrons - what if someone is afraid of dogs? What if they are allergic?
