Re: debate: Dogs at restuarants

i havent read this whole thread, but i emphatically say NO! a dog does not belong at a restaurant outside or inside. i am personally scared of dogs. if i am eating at a restaurant i dont need to sit in fear b/c there is a dog next to me. i also do not think it is sanitary. i am also not a fan of driving with dogs in your lap or bring dogs to the supermarket.

Re: debate: Dogs at restuarants

I do this pretty frequently when I travel with my dog, so obviously I think it's fine.

My dog usually behaves better than my children (and my children are amazing in restaurants!).

Re: debate: Dogs at restuarants

I definately don't think dogs belong in restaurants, in or out. I am afraid of dogs and so is my daughter. I don't think I've ever seen a dog at a restaurant and I certainly would complain.

I don't want to sit next to anything in a restaurant that isn't wearing underwear and licks it's own privates.

Just my own opinion.

oh man, dont sit next to me then

Re: debate: Dogs at restuarants

It's not appropriate. I am a huge dog lover but when I go out to eat or food shop or shop in the mall... the dogs stay home where they belong. I know us dog lovers treat our dogs like children but they are still a dog and belong at home, not at a restaurant. I would never..

My first thought was no way, you should never bring a dog to a restaurant, inside or out.

But considering the culture of brooklyn/manhattan and that a lot of these restaurants allow people to bring pets to the outside seating part, I do think it is OK to bring a well-behaved dog in that situation. Now that I think of it, I once had dinner at a pretty fancy upper eastside French cafe with a professor of mine and her small dog. We ate in the sidewalk seating outdoor part. it was totally fine.

If people are that offended, allergic or afraid of dogs, I would hope they would go to another restaurant that does not allow pets, I'm sure there are plenty of other comparable places in the area that are pet-free. Or they could sit in the indoor section away from the pets. I think that's fair.

I am wondering how many people would have a different reply if a different person had asked the question.

As long as the dog is sitting and behaving - I don't see a problem with it.

Same here, I mean if dogs are jumping on the tables or barking alot then it would be annoying. If not, I don't see the big deal. Typically these places are for a casual bite to eat, no gourmet dinner.

right, i mean, the dog lays next to your table as you enjoy your meal.

whats the big deal right?

I would have the same answer too. Like I said earlier, my dogs have a thick coat and especially during the summer they shed like crazy. I would never think to bring them to a restaurant. I find dog hair in my food all the time. Doesn't bother me because I'm used to it. But it would definately bother someone else I'm sure.

I don't think it has anything to do with behavior. It has to do with being sanitary.

I know you would, as would a number of people. But there are a few who answer questions differently depending on who has asked. For some it may be the same answer but they would say it differently.

I wouldn't eat at a restaurant that allowed dogs to join their owners at the table - whether inside or out. animals do not belong anywhere near food in public places.

i do agree, but most people just think im a dog snob, so i am used to it.

it was meant to be debated, so i'm not taking any offense whatsoever.

but i did see like maybe 2 or 3 repsonses that did not shock me at all... the way they were written i mean. i was expecting it when i saw they had commented.

Re: debate: Dogs at restuarants

Lolita I am glad you recognize that. People defend their passions to the end. I know I would! We all know you are an animal lover, but sadly, my allergies wouldn't recognize you or Bob Barker and I mean no offense by that.

I suffered so greatly as a child because my mother never had me under the care of an allergist and we had a dog that shed terribly for 13 years. Now that I have more control over where my legs take me and I have my own health insurance, I address my symptoms to the best of my ability so I can tolerate what ever is put in my path - and even then it is really hard. I have been medicated, I have gotten shots and just about anything short of acupuncture. This is why I have a fish. One day, I hope to have a dog that will not cause me discomfort, but a) our landlord won't allow it and b)my DH doesn't like dogs.

You're the way I am with cats. I can't go anyplace that has a cat. I can't truly resolve why I think it is okay to take a dog to a restaurant yet I refuse to be near cats and am offended when people think I should tolerate it.

I guess it is because I am used to having to move or not going to a place that has a cat. It's also because I am such a dog person and not a cat person. Last but not least, I am a bit of a hypocrite!

Why the distinction? You're still at a group of tables where food is being served...

I don't have a problem with that -- Service dogs are (for very good reason) allowed plenty of places pets aren't.

To be honest, though, I've never once seen a seeing eye dog in a restaurant.

Re: debate: Dogs at restuarants

IF the restaurant allowed dogs, I see no problem with it.
We took Misty to New Hope, PA. and they are very dog friendly. We took her to lunch with us at an outside restaurant, went to a nice indoor dinner and left her back in the room, then went to an outdoor bar and brought her along.
As long as the dog is well-behaved and the restaurant allows it, I see no problem. We have always asked if she is okay before we ask for a table.

And, I have to agree with Jess, sometimes when you are in Brooklyn or Manhattan, you are just walking around and get hungry and want to stop for a bite. If the place says okay, what is the problem?
