It wouldn't bother me personally- outside- but I could definitely see that it could possibly bother people- and they would have every right to that complaint.

I am of the opinion that animals do not belong in or around restaurants, Meaning the tables outside.

I have no problem with the dog being in an outside cafe, as long as it's permitted.

doesn't bother me if outside, no for inside. If the restaurant allows it, and the patrons know that, than to each his own for choosing to eat there.

Re: debate: Dogs at restuarants
I see plenty of outside places in the city where people have their dogs next to them, usually on the outside of the gate. I have no problem with that. Even if they were inside the gate, i don't see an issue. There are more things floating inthe air that I'd be worried about than dog hair or whatever.

I don't want to sit next to anything in a restaurant that isn't wearing underwear and licks it's own privates.
Just my own opinion.
I guess you won't be eating dinner with my DH anytime soon... Sorry I had to go there.
But in regards to the OP, I don't feel it's appropriate to bring a dog or any kind of animal to a restaurant whether you're dining alfresco or not.
The ONLY kind of animal I suppose I would make an exception for is a seeing eye dog or something of the like.

If it's outside and the animal is well behaved I don't see a problem with it.

I absolutely adore dogs, but they have no place near food or any place that others might not love them the same (restaurant, supermarket, stores in general)

I'm a dog lover...but IMO unless the dog is needed, i.e. a seeing eye dog; then dogs should not be at restaurants

Re: debate: Dogs at restuarants
I dont mind them at outdoor cafe's. Here in Charlotte, we actually have a bar called "The Dog Bar" where you can bring your dog to the bar.
That being said, my dog is way too crazy to ever consider bringing to a restaurant, etc.

Re: debate: Dogs at restuarants
I think it's perfectly fine. (this is coming from a HUGE animal lover though- I like animals more than people).
DH and I try to frequent restaurants that have patios and allow us to bring Char. She is like a child to us- and she is cleaner than most people I see on the street LOL.
In Europe dogs are allowed inside AND outside restaurants and it never causes any problems.

yes, forgot to add this... the animal needs to be well behaved of course.
now, if only we could have a "kids must be well behaved in order to attend" rule in place.

Re: debate: Dogs at restuarants
I love my dogs, but I wouldn't bring them to a restaurant. They shed, and I wouldn't want dog hair flying onto someone elses plate.

Re: debate: Dogs at restuarants
At sidewalk type restaurants, I think it's great. People who have dogs have a responsibility to socialize the dogs and expose them to a variety of sights and sounds. It is worse to keep your dog in your house/apartment at all times than it is to take out a well trained dog. At a sidewalk restaurant, I have more of a chance of being hit with a random cigarette from the street than I do of a dog tainting my food.
That said, my little dachshund was tied to a table once and he dragged the table about 3 feet. We did not take him back to such places until he was trained a lot more. At the time, we found a place that was not busy, just in case he acted up. He was fine until he wanted some food that someone dropped near him.

Re: debate: Dogs at restuarants
I use to live in the city and there was a French restaurant at the corner of my block with outdoor seating. I actually saw someone sitting at their table with the dog sitting in the chair next to them eating from a plate on the table. I dont know how the restaurant allowed it or got away with it but it was insane. I couldnt believe what I was seeing
I dont think dogs belong at restaurants even when they are not dining

Re: debate: Dogs at restuarants
Doesnt bother me.
I think if you are out-why not bring your dog out? Doesnt bother me at all.
My uncle once owned a restaurant with an outside bar in the back and he had a golden lab that he would keep out there in the summertime. He would keep him inside usually, but all the customers would BEG for him to keep the dog outsid w/them at the bar (where they also served food there too).

Re: debate: Dogs at restuarants
My sense of smell is very strong. I love dogs but I am allergic. If I were at a table and a person sat down next to me with a dog that shed a lot, I would more than likely start to sneeze. I would have to get up and move inside and I shouldn't have to. The wofting(sp) smell of cigarettes from passersby is bad enough when dining outside, I shouldn't have to watch my step too.

Re: debate: Dogs at restuarants
for me, i don't care
DH is HIGHLY allergic to animals...he's on shots and still has major reactions. so i would say it's inappropriate because he couldn't enjoy his meal if a dog was next to him

Re: debate: Dogs at restuarants
I have no problem with dogs at restaurants
Actually, my favorite restaurants in Key West allow dogs inside and even give them their own bowls can't wait to bring my Brutus there!
And I am so curious as to where in Europe dogs are allowed inside? I am asking because when I go to Italy - dogs are dogs are dogs. . .meaning that my family has dogs but they NEVER come inside and they only eat scraps and aren't really loved (IMO). When I picked up my cousin's dog and cuddle him - my family was DISGUSTED with me and actually told the story to several people. Of course, my family is from a teeny tiny town so that may make a difference?

No, I'm not really ok with it, to be honest. But that being said, if I saw it, I wouldn't really give it too much thought.

Re: debate: Dogs at restuarants
Do I think it's ok? No. I don't think dogs belong in the restaurants (which includes the sidewalk table).
Does it bother me if a dog was sitting quietly by its owner at a sidewalk cafe? No.
If it's a dog friendly restaurant & I have a problem with it, then I should opt for a place that doesn't allow dogs.

No. I wouldn't want a dog near me while I'm eating at a restaraunt. I don't care what size it is either.
