Salary/Interviews, etc...

OK, so I have YET to interview, or even apply for a job... Chat Icon

Im tossing around a few ideas, teaching toddlers ITalian, with my boys still little, Im not quite sure I want to take the leap into full time just yet. Chat Icon

and with everyone saying "there are no jobs", I really havent even poked my head around to see what the deal is out there..

SO

incase I do apply and get called for jobs.
What's the proper etiquette as far as salary discussion. Are applicants just accepting any starting salary because job offers are few and far between, or are you actually negotiating (im such a chicken with this Chat Icon )

and if youre negotiating, how do you even know what salaries SHOULD BE in that area? IS there a website that lists salaries/districts, etc.

Each district has a contract already made. You will be placed on that contract by years experience and credits earned. There really is no room for negotiating unless you are in a high demand area and have more than 4 years experience. Since schools only have to reimburse you for the 4 years that might be where some negotiating comes into play. Like if another district wanted me since I am in a high demand area they would have to start me on step 12 with a masters plus 30. I would not take less than that since I am going into year 12 in my district.

Hope that makes sense.

Many districts have bilingual elementary programs. Once your bilingual population reaches a certain amount, you are required to have a program for them at any grade. As the demographic of LI continues to change, bilingual demand is going to skyrocket.

With your background, I would totally go the bilingual route. Even special ed jobs are getting hard to come by.

Re: Salary/Interviews, etc...

I have never asked the salary. When I was a teaching assistant they came out and told me what the salary was because it was so low but for a teacher I never asked and was never told until Ihad the job
