DO you think it's crazy to buy a 9 year old...

name brand clothing? I wanted to get Scotty some Hollister and Abercrombie stuff for back to school. I've gotten a few comments that there's "no need" to start with the name brands at such a young age. I wasn't going to buy his whole wardrode there, just a few shirts.

Am I nuts?

Buy whatever you want, it's your money. Who cares what other people think. Everyone just loves to give their opinions about what you should dowith your money, right?

Just keep in mind, the name brand clothing doesn't get cheaper as the kids get older.

That's fine! Clothes are clothes... it's not like you are buying him a LV wallet haha or an Iphone! Chat Icon

I mean, if you only shop at a place like the Mall what are you going to find besides name brands? And if you think about it-- even something as "simple" as Baby Gap is a name brand!

And by God, my nephew had everything Baby Gap when he was little. I can't wait until he is old enough for Abercrombie!

I wouldn't buy his entire wardrobe there, but a few cute things wouldn't hurt. Especially if you can catch a sale.

I voted "other." I don't think he is way too young, but if he isn't asking for it, I wouldn't buy it.

Re: DO you think it's crazy to buy a 9 year old...

i don't buy name brand. so what.

you buy name brand. so what.

it's your money.

my $.02.... as long as you're not taking money away from your mortgage/rent, food, utilities, etc portion of your budget, do what you want with your money when it comes to your children's clothing.

as long as it's clean, age-appropriate, and covers them accordingly... do what you want.

I voted "other," because I don't believe in sporting logos and brand names and I don't think it's a value that I would want to instill in my children. However, if it's just a shirt and it doesn't have the brand name or logo on it, that's fine. I believe in style, not branding.

I would probably buy a few t-shirts or something that say abercrombie on them, but I wouldn't go nuts. He's going to wear them for less than a year, probably.

I don't think a 9 year old understands what a "brand" is - think of it this way - every item has a brand name...whether it's "high-end" or not - as long as the child does not get into the habit of demanding to only have the high-end, then it doesn't matter.

OMG...I can only imagine what my kids would be like. Do you think they realize what they're saying or going by what their "society" (adults) around them say?

Not sure. Maybe he does. Chat Icon

I know Alex P. Keaton is also pizzed off at McDonald's because they're trying to "trick" him by advertising their food in their ads so that we eat there and that we have to go only to their store to get a certain toy.Chat Icon

You'd be surprised. My best friend's 5 year old to another little girl in her class "only cute girls wear Juicy." I was horrified when I heard that. Chat Icon

My kids have been wearing Gap since they were born. I only buy a few things that I can afford and the rest at Target as they play really tough.

I don't see a problem with it.... it's your money if you have it why not! If you want you can always resell on ebay when he outgrows them.

I think it's fine. It's when the kids think that name brands define them that I see the problem. But there is nothing wrong with quality, nice clothing. I'm just partial to buying it on sale. Chat Icon

Re: DO you think it's crazy to buy a 9 year old...

My niece has been wearing Abercrombie since 1st grade and now she is 10. She absolutely knows what it is. She appreciates it and my sister can afford it. My niece carries around the Abercrombie bag that I bought her for the holidays. Any other bag, she would have enjoyed for maybe a month or so.
