I am a certified teacher but with no luck in the job hunt Chat Icon What other jobs are out there that offer a decent salary with a decent benefits package?

This may be a dumb question but it's something I never had to worry about before. Chat Icon

Re: Benefits

i can only speak for my own industry - public relations - in saying that i don't think you can hone in on one particular industry to ensure good benefits. i'm at my 4th pr job now and while i'm happy with the benefits i have now, my last pr job offered really cr@ppy ones. i think it totally depends on the company and not necessarily the industry.

I get that part of it I am just trying to think of options that do not require me to go back to school or anything. I don't expect someone to have some perfect answer I just want some ideas. Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Benefits

i think it really varies from employer to employer.

my husband works for a company that handles Rx drugs and our benefits are fully paid for. He is an accountant, but everyone gets the same thing (IT, finance, pharmasists, etc)

Re: Benefits

have you thought about leave replacement positions or permanent sub positions? these give you regular teacher salary and full benefits. only negative, they might not be able to keep you for the following year if tenured teachers come back.

also, some districts provide their TAs with full benefits...only negative is that the salary is lower than a teacher's.

also, NYC is ALWAYS looking for teachers. i would bet anything that could find something there... they offer a good salary now that the teachers have a contract and the benfits are Great! you pay NOTHING towards your medical

Re: Benefits

Re: Benefits

What about a legal assistant? I know a few of the legal assistants at my law firm have 4 year degrees and took this job until they eventually get into the career they want to be in.

ETA: I just saw that you have another post about legal assitants/paralegals!

Where do you work and what kinds of jobs are there? I don't know much about higher ed.

I worked in higher ed. Clearly you could teach, but you would need at least a Masters and a LOT of experience and/or a Ph.D.

I worked in higher ed. in student affairs. Teachers are often great at these jobs. Working in residential life, student activities, campus ministry, etc. Student affairs supports the growth of students OUTSIDE of class: housing, activities, student leadership. Also, admissions... interviewing and reviewing applications. Involves a lot of travel though as you represent the school all over the place at fairs, hugh schools, etc. Also, there is always administrative jobs.... secretaries, etc. for departments or offices. I loved my time in higher ed. and the benfits are good. Often, most colleges or universities will give you full tuition remission as a benefit. I paid nothing for a $50,000 masters degree from Fordham because I worked there. check out the chronicle of higher education... jobs are posted there.
i think it's thechronicle.com.

Re: Benefits

There are lots of different types of positions, as the previous poster mentioned. I work in career services, so I work directly with students, but there are business affairs, alumni relations, events planning, athletics, you name it - most universities are like cities unto themselves, so there are a lot of different types of jobs.

Tuition remission is one of the biggest benefits. I've gotten a masters and so far most of my doctorate paid for. My DH could also go back to school for free if he wanted to, and so can our children when it comes time for that.

You can also check out www.higheredjobs.com, or just visit the web sites of the local schools.

Feel free to FM if you have additional questions.

Re: Benefits

Have you been on olasjobs.org? This is the online application site for long island school districts. If you are certified you can work in any school setting, public or private. Breaking into a LI school district can be tough. Sometimes people get lucky with leave replacement or sub positions in districts. I also noticed that specialities (special ed, reading, etc.) have more success. Some teachers go back to school to specialize to make themselves more marketable on LI.

Yes I have been on OLAS for a year now. I cannot afford at this point to go back to school so I don't know what to do. To finish my paralegal courses I can go to Suffolk Community which is affordable but that's about it. I can't continue graduate work at $1000/credit Chat Icon
