Homework records

Can anyone share how they keep a record of students missing homeworks? Unfortunately I teach in a school where each day about half the class doesn't do some if not all of their homework. Its not always the same students either. With this large number I haven't found a way to record this without taking up too much class time. Any suggestions? (I teach 4th grade)

Well..my kids usually do most if not all of their homework with the exception of one or two. I teach 4th grade and have a small calendar. When I check the work, I write in the box the name of the child and what homework they are missing.

I also am fourth.
In the past, I did a HW book with slips. Kids who missed HW needed to fill out the slip and take it home and get it signed. It worked ok, but the usual offenders just filled it out and nothing ever came of it. (Even with phone calls home sometimes!)

More recently, I use the HW binder from the Fountas and Pinnell book. The kids have to sign the page each day upon entering the room. They either check "completed" or "not completed" and if so, "Why". (Our kids complete missing HW at recess.)

After three of the "not completed", I call home. It is a good record keeping system and the parents can see it right in front of them.

I teach HS. I keep track of HW in my grade book. I write in the assigment and I put a dot if they did it and a minus sign if it is half complete and an X if they didn't do it. Then I calculate a grade for homework based on the number completed divided by the number assigned (it is a straight percentage).

ETA: I mis-read the question. I keep a calendar with the daily HW assignments written on it in the classroom. The corresponding handouts for the HW are in file folders next to the calendar. Students are required to check to see what HW they missed and turn it into me the next day.

I'm not sure if this is answering your question, but here goes. In my record book, I write in the assignment. As I check the h/w, whoever did it gets a check in that column. If the child didn't do the assigment, they get a circle. This stands for missing. When it gets done, the circle gets a check to indicate that it's late. This way, I can see how many late assignments a child did.

In terms of ownership, I have a friend who keeps an index card box. When a child is missing an assignment, he or she finds his or her card and writes down why it was missing.

When class starts I walk around super-quick with my grade book and record who has it and who doesn't. It takes about 3-5 minutes max, while the students are working on the Do Now. Late homework goes into a bucket in front of the room and I go through that weekly.

When I taught Math, I did this since homework was given every night. This was also at the MS/HS level, however it could be adapted to any level.

I did a weekly sheet.

When I check homework they get points based on completeness. If they didn't show work they got 1 point, 0 for not doing it and whatever else based on the amount completed/effort.

I used a stamp to stamp the "box" of the score and they got a weekly grade. If there weekly HW grade was less than a 75% I would have them get it signed. I informed the parents about my ways in my syllabus. I also kept every HW sheet in a file by student so in case there was ever a concern i could pull their record out.

all my HWs are #'ed

i have a spreadsheet with each name

when a hw is missed i write in the number that was not done. if it wasnt done b/c of an abs i write the number and a little A next to it so i know they can make it up.
