If I still lived in NY, this would NEVER fly...

The stuff that goes on in the schools here in NC would NEVERRRRR fly in NY!!!!

On Wednesdays, I don't get a prep period. None.

My class is the "peanut allergy" class. So not only do I have to read at least 22 labels at lunch, and another 22 at snack, I have to personally WIPE DOWN OUR LUNCH TABLES WITH CLOROX WIPES!!!! AND the chairs!!! While my class stands there!

Recess is supervised...by the teachers. We also have to eat lunch WITH our students in the lunchroom. And even though we are expected to teach Math for 1 hour and 15 minutes, fit in at least 5 read alouds per day, and reader's workshop for at least an hour--we get a mere 25 minutes to eat lunch.

And last, but not least--the pay is just slightly more than I was making during my first year teaching in a Catholic school on LI. The only difference is, now I have 2 years experience and a Masters degree.

I'm just AMAZED at what goes on here. Don't get me wrong, I love living here and my fellow faculty members are amazing--but it makes me wonder why I just spent 7 years pursuing my higher education!!!

Vent over.

ETA...I used to work with a woman who worked at a very upscale private school on the NS of LI and they had to eat lunch with the kids and teach them table manners

No unions here in VA either - though that sounds worse than VA.

I never worked on LI - and only just realized how much better the unions seem to make it up there.

We are regularly expected to stay far beyond our contract hours w/o compensation.

Re: If I still lived in NY, this would NEVER fly...

I feel you, some things they do are weird down here. But it might also depend on the school.
Last year the school I was at the teachers got a prep period everyday when the students had their specials. They did eat lunch with their students, which was to model good behavior in the lunchroom. Although most teachers would sit at a seperate table, but in sight of their class. Outside both the teacher and asst were on the playground, b/c they wanted "more eyes" on the playground. A few years back a student fell off the apparatus and broke her arm and they said if more people were watching it wouldn't have happened. Chat Icon The assts are also responsible for wiping everything down etc.

The school I'm at now is different...again, the teachers do get a prep period...in my class, since we are self contained and our students are in and out on different schedules, we get a prep period probably three times a week. For lunch it is not required that the teachers eat with the students. The assts are the ones who stay with the class and supervise them. Again, some teachers do choose to sit and eat with their class. For us this doesn't apply b/c we eat in our classroom with our kids. At recess the teacher does not need to be present, only the assitant.

People often forget how good they have it in NY. We should all be thanking our unions and union reps because they have fought long and hard for what we have. Even though there are difference among NY districts none of the public schools require the teachers to do as much as they do in other states.

And herein lies a big debate in education.
As a Union rep, I agree!!!

Well said! I already put AT LEAST 2 hours of work a day into school... and this is even working through my prep. and often my lunch. i can't imagine how late i would be at school if i didn't have an hour long duty free lunch and a prep. period.

When I was student teaching in Virginia, the teachers supervised recess and had to wipe down all the tables/chairs - because there was no cafeteria. The kids ate at their desks.

In CA, I got no prep period on Fridays.

In neither place do I remember getting more than a 30 minutes break for lunch time.

It's interesting, all the differences from place to place.

wow! this is making me soo thankful for our union... i work in NJ!
we get an hour for lunch. lunch duty rotates, so like once a week we have a 15 minute lunch or recess duty. we also get a 45 minute prep during the day. the kids all eat in the cafeteria, so no wiping down desks or anything... AND we have about 3 staff assistants that do copying, laminating, etc for us....

We send people in Nov and Jan. I chose Nov because Jan is my b'day weekend. Some of the workshops seem pretty good. I don't remember the exact title of the workshop now but I'll let you know.
