A little freaked out....UPDATE!

First I want to say thank you to all those who gave me advice! I appreciate it!! Chat Icon
I spoke with my principal and he asked me to handle it. I was a bit surprised by that, but I called the parents and spoke with them. They spoke with their child and he came to school and apologized and told me it wouldn't happen again. I also spoke to the psychologist about this and she is going to speak with him. I feel much better and I sure hope that it doesn't happen again. Thanks again everyone! Chat Icon

i wouldn't make any decisions without the principal's input and guidance. it's really his responsibility when something possibly harmful comes up. speak with him and the school psychologist. schools don't take these things lightly, but it's way beyond what you should deal with.

i would email them right now so they have it on record when you told them. they might not want to wait until tuesday to do something. good luck.

Re: A little freaked out....

Definitely get to the principal ASAP on Tuesday with the notebook in question. Let him/her handle the rest. Geez, nothing like a fun lesson gone crazy!

I don't know your situation, but you may want to put in a phone call tomorrow to your principal at home (or even an assistant principal or coordinator) just to give them a heads up. Just explain that while you are sure it is nothing, you just want to let them know so you don't dump it all on them Tuesday morning. I am sure they would understand.

In addition to alerting the principal and parents, you could also have a school social worker or counselor come in to talk to them about anger and expressing anger and what they should do if they think they want to hurt someone, or themselves.

I don't know that punishment is the way to go- if some of your kids are really having problems and feel the need to express themselves like this, they need real help.

I think this is also a reflection of what these kids see on tv and in video games. I teach middle school and I'm appalled at the things my kids are allowed to watch. This could also be a reflection of your school's neighborhood- though I don't know where you teach. Many of my kids are very blase about violence, because they have heard/seen shootings and other terrible things around their homes and in their homes.

I totally agree, kids are going up too fast with no guidance at all...

I was going to say the same thing...Email or call or speak to him asap If you don't have a contact number, find someone who does. In todays society, these things are not taken lightly!

Re: A little freaked out....

i would inform the guidance counselor and school psychologist as well...threats are not taken lightly in my school, journaled, in an assignment, or just thrown out there.

I agree too. I'd be particularly concerned about the student(s) who wrote about violence. The stories about Hooters and pants flying off are inappropriate and reflect poor judgement, but would not be of as much concern as the bomb one.

I agree with emailing the principal ASAP and CC the AP as well. Then go see him/her first thing on Tuesday to discuss. Bring the notebook. This is what would happen in my school: The school psychologist or social worker would pull that kid to address his underlying anger and assess the level of risk of him hurting others or himself. The parent would be called in to discuss the situation immediately. The kid might be recommended for counseling inside/outside school or a psychiatric evaluation if he is truly at risk.
