Need Help - Starting Stage 2 Solids UPDATE

Ped said to start Stage 2 foods and add lunch. DS is 6 1/2 months. She said to do cereal and fruit for breakfast, fruit or veggie or 1/2 and 1/2 for lunch and meat combo for dinner. She said if there is a carb in dinner, i.e. chicken and rice, I don't have to give oatmeal. I'm confused because if I give cereal as a carb if it's not already in the dinner, those night he'll be eating significantly more than nights when I just give him the dinner.

What does/did everybody else do???

Thanks so much for all replies!!!

I gave DS chicken and noodle for dinner last night and he gagged terribly and then refused to eat anymore and screamed his head off until I took him out of the high chair.

He did the same thing when we started veggies. I have to put fruit on every spoon. A month later, he's just now starting to accept veggies without gagging (as much!). I'm still giving with fruit, but less and less.

I'll try the same fruit trick with the meat until, hopefully, he accepts it. Does anyone elses DC have a hard time accepting new foods?

Thanks!!

SECOND UPDATE

Tried chicken with apples last night. He didn't gag as much, and ate maybe 6 spoonfuls before he started to refuse and scream... Chat Icon

Anyone else have any advice or experience resistance with new foods?

Thank you!

Re: Need Help - Starting Stage 2 Solids

dont drive yourself crazy... Here is a sample of what DS eats in a day.

*6oz bottle
*4tbsp Oatmeal or Mixed cereal with a stage 2 jar of fruit
*6oz bottle
*6 or 4 1/2oz bottle
*veggie and meat (some with fruit some with rice or potatoe)
*6oz bottle
*sometimes a fruit or veggie or another 4-6oz bottle

my day starts around 6:30 7am and ends at about 6-8pm

My DS eats what he wants and lets me know if he does not want what I am giving him. He is now 9 months old and now eating table food. But I have been still feeding him jar food. Also has been doing this schedule since he was about 5-6 months old

hope this helps

Re: Need Help - Starting Stage 2 Solids

when we went to meats like the chicken and rice, I didn't do cereal at all for dinner. That's when I dialed back to cereal at just b-fast and lunch. IF she didn't eat the meat mix, then I would mix up some cereal...but she seemed to really like it.

Re: Need Help - Starting Stage 2 Solids

You can create your own schedule according to what DS likes. You dont have to follow the dr's schedule exactly.

DS just turned 7 months but has been eating stage 2's for awhile. This is his typical schedule:

8 am: 2 tbsp. cereal & bottle
11 am: fruit & bottle
2 pm: bottle (sometimes I give him some of the Gerber puffs)
5 pm: veggie & bottle
8 pm: bottle

I havent started meats yet. I bought the Gerber Stage 2 chicken soup and will give it a try this week.

I never really thought about the carbs...

At 6 months DD was eating

6:30am 7oz bottle
8:30am oatmeal and stage 2 fruit
11:00am 7oz bottle
1:00pm stage 2 veggie
3:30pm 7oz bottle
6:00pm meat/veggie combo and fruit
7:30pm 7oz bottle.

She didn't always take the entire 7oz bottle, but I offered it.

Good luck and have fun!!!

ETA: she gets a sippy with water at each meal and throughout the day.

Just to let you know, my DS hates the chicken noodle one too. I would try the chicken with apples of the turkey with sweet potatos. The consistancy of those are SO much better than the chicken noodle.Chat Icon

Re: Need Help - Starting Stage 2 Solids UPDATE

I actually add a bit of cereal to each new food. I think it helps with the taste and the texture of the food. I also tend to keep their foods a bit thick b/c it makes less of a mess. I was actually encouraged to do this with my older daughter b/c she had feeding issues. When I had other children I just did what I knew. It worked very well with the twins. DS has started on cereal (he is 16lbs 25+inches at 11weeks) and his cereal is pretty thick. He does very very well. I think adding the cereal keeps the texture consistant so they can adjust to just the flavor of the new food slowly and then slowly adjust to the texture.
