Question...from a parent
My step-daughter is in middle school (grade 6). We received her progress report over the holiday...it wasn't that spectacular.
For the teachers...at what point do you contact the parents? I would have expected to hear something from the teachers if she was doing that poorly...a phone call, a note, something. What is the norm...just sending out the progress report?

Re: Question...from a parent
Was she failing or just not doing as well as hoped? Kids who are failing get calls home from me. If they are doing 70's work I will send a progress report.

Re: Question...from a parent
All of my students get their progress report no matter how they are doing- school policy
If students are missing a certain number of homework or are failing I will be in contact witht he family-
If a parent emails me or calls me and wants an update on their child I will obviously give them the update.
If students are in getting C's I wont call/email (unless parents are in contact with me OR unless they have gone from an A to C...a significant drop warrants a call or email

Re: Question...from a parent
I don't have time to contact every parent of every kid who is failing or doing poorly. I think that's the purpose of the progress report, to let you know before the actual report card comes out. Also I would expect that the parents are checking with their kid after a test or quiz to see their scores and making sure they're doing their hw every night, so I feel that a parent shouldn't be too surprised if their kid is doing poorly. If a parent calls though, of course I get back to them.

We do check homework everynight...but we can only check what she brings home...no idea if there is something she is not doing. Also...according to her, the teachers don't give back tests/quizes...the only ones that seem to appear are the ones that are good...I have yet to see any that aren't good...but I can tell from the progress report, that there are some...KWIM?
I emailed a few of the teachers today...we'll see what happens.

Yes...she is in the C's category...but if she put in some more effort, she is totally of being in the B category...so she is not failing...but she is not doing as well as she could be.
Thanks ladies

if the only tests you see are good ones, it sounds like she's keeping the bad ones from you. most teachers give back tests and some have you sign and return them, but i don't know any teachers who don't give them back at all, especially in middle/elementary school.
i only contact parents when their child is doing extremely poorly. usually they will contact me if there is a concern.
i could never contact parents each time a child does poorly on a test or in class. that's why i send tests home to be signed.
good luck to you. i would stay on top of your daughter and insist that she tell you when her tests/quizzes are. by middle school it really is the child's responsibility to be in charge of her schoolwork. best of luck!

ITA.
Typically after the first test of each marking period, I attempt to call home if a student fails the test. I figure this is me touching base and then I tell them when the next test is and to keep on top of them. Very rarely do I see this having any impact on the student's grade so it is so frustrating. By the time we have the next test, it is usually progress report time. If a student is failing, I believe it is the parent's responsibility to touch base with me.
Also - it could be that your child did poorly on a big test that they just had so the poor grade may be relatively "new" and therefore the teacher could not contact you before the progress reports went out - if that makes sense.

I agree. We are not required to send progress reports in my school. I send notices home to those who are in danger of failing. I feel that this is the heads up notice before report cards go out.
I can understand how it would be frustrating for parents when kids only show the good stuff. I know that many of my progress reports were opened and hidden before mom or dad could get to the mailbox. I have had some parent teacher conferences that looked like this:

If a student was in the C range then a progress report would be my communication as well. This is because my school likes us to send them at this point in the quarter however we only really have to send one if the grade is below a C.
I think emailing the teachers is the best thing to do. Some of my parents email me weekly for grades. Good luck.

Re: Question...from a parent
If a child is failing or missing more than 3 homeworks I ABSOLUTELY call home. If a child has had 2 failing test grades then I attempt to call home. All failing quizzes should be signed in my class, so no parent should be surprised. The transition to middle school can be overwhelming for both the parent and the students (now having more than one teacher etc). Our school has a thing called green sheets, your school might have something similar. Students receive a sheet in homeroom every Friday that they must be given to all their teachers. On it the teachers list missed homeworks , quiz and test grades for the wreek, their participation and behavior as well as any upcoming quizzes or tests. The parents are then supposed to give the child consequences if they do not come home with it. That might be a suggestion.
If you would like other suggestions please feel free to fm me

Re: Question...from a parent
In my school, we have our grades posted on the internet at all times, therefore the parents are aware (or should be aware) of the grades at all times.

Re: Question...from a parent
I teach 6th grade. I call if they have miised over 3-4 HWs, i send home all tet/quizzes to get signed so if they are signed, parents know the grades. If they return a test/quiz without a signature (And the greade is less than satisfying) i call home
If a stuent is in the 70s but working hard, i wont call home bc IMO, theres nothing wrong there
