Reactions to antibiotics

does anyone have a reaction to antibiotics? like a yeast infection or other allergic reactions?

if so, do you ask your doctor for anything else if you have a bad cold?

my Mom told me to ask the doctor for "sulphur drugs". but I never heard of them before.

Re: Reactions to antibiotics

I have gotten reactions from antibiotics. They used to use sulfur for yeast/urinary tract infections. They don't use them much anymore, but you can ask for something for these things. Especially because they can be very painful.

Hmm you shouldn't be taking antibiotics for a cold - they do nothing - antibiotics only work if you have a bacterial infection - not viral - and a cold is a virus (unless it has turned into something else that you would need the meds for).

I have problems with some antibiotics - but I don't take the ones I do have issues with. If you get yeast infections you should be eating yogurt when you take antibiotics for the acidophilos (or you could just take the acidophilos).

really? so why do docs always want to perscribe antibiotics when I have a cold?

I am leaving for the doctor in about 1/2 an hour. I have the worst cold I think I have ever had. plus I have 101 fever. what should I ask for?

Re: Reactions to antibiotics

I usually get an allergic reaction to antibiotics, so whenever my dr. prescribes them, I always ask for Diflucan (for yeast infectins) also. It's on pink pill and it works great. They have no problem writing the script either. It's very common for women, esp. if they are on BC.

A doctor should not be prescribing abx for a common cold. They are caused by viruses, which cannot be killed by abx. But sometimes patients DEMAND abx, even for a cold, so doctors give in. It's why we have a major problem with abx-resistant bacteria.

If it's not a viral infection and your doc gives you abx, take acidophilous or just eat a lot of yogurt (like 2x/day).

Btw, your mom is talking about sulfa drugs. They're pretty hardcore and MANY people are allergic to them, so sometimes you have to ask specifically for them.

Hope you feel better!

Re: Reactions to antibiotics

I'm surprised your doc always gives you antibiotics. My doc gives them to me only when it's gone on for a week or more. It's possible that your body reacts this way because you don't need the medication.

If you have a fever, then the meds are probably necessary. Acidophilus, yogurt and Diflucan. I've never had a yeast infection, but I've heard how horrible they can be.

I hope you feel better soon! Stay hydrated and rest.

man, that blows.

thanks everyone

I'm back from the Doc and she gave me a sample of Nasacort & Duratuss in addition to a perscrip for Levaquin (antibiotic) despite me telling her that I get YI's from them Chat Icon she said to only fill the Levaquin if i get worse tomorrow.

I honestly don't understand why Docs prescribe antibiotics for a cold. esp now that I know they kill bacterial infections, not viral.

hopefully the Duratuss & Nasacort will help me.

Re: Reactions to antibiotics

The Nasacort is good stuff. I've used it. If you feel congested try Mucinex. DH used it and he liked it.

I'm sure you will start to feel better soon.

So no flu?

that's not low.

If you are sick your pressure could be off. Did she take it more than once? Your pressure changes all the time.
