Kind of Gross question about Asparagus
Maybe TMI- but I could have sworn I read somewhere that asparagus makes your pee smell funny. Is this true? I hope so because I ate some yesterday and I noticed my pee is funky smelling today! I hope that's normal!
Anyone???

Re: Kind of Gross question about Asparagus
YES! It makes it smell very strange but that is bc it flush out your system...
right from Wikipedia Asparagus and urine Marcel Proust claimed that asparagus "...transforms my chamber-pot into a flask of perfume."
Some of the constituents of asparagus are metabolized and excreted in the urine, giving it a distinctive smell. This is due to various sulfur-containing degradation products (e.g. thiols and thioesters) and ammonia. Recent studies suggest that every individual produces the odorous compounds upon eating, but that only about 40% of individuals have the genes required to smell them.[10][11] The speed of onset of urine smell is rapid, and has been estimated to occur within 15-30 minutes from ingestion.[12

I'm pretty sure that Wikipedia is not entirely accurate on this point. I thought NOT everyone develops the odor in their urine after eating asparagus AND there is a small percentage of people who are unable to smell the odor...
ETA - Anyone know for sure?

YES- this is what I just found...
The good news is that asparagus does not affect everyone. Studies conducted on the "asparagus urine" phenomenon (aren't you glad you didn't volunteer!) indicate that roughly 40 to 50 percent of those tested developed the distinctive odor. Surprisingly enough, there is also a segment of the population who cannot smell the sulphurous fumes of asparagus-laced urine. It is believed that both the generation of the odoriferous urine and the ability to smell it are based on genetics. Only those with a certain gene can break down the chemicals inside the asparagus into their smelly components, and only those with the proper gene can smell the results of that chemical breakdown

Re: Kind of Gross question about Asparagus
I had asparagus last night, didn't notice any difference in the way my pee smelled.
Maybe you have to eat a lot of it?

Nope, you're in one of two groups -- either the group that doesn't produce the odor from asparagus or the group that cannot smell the odor.

Me too!!! DH tells me all the time after eating asparagus that his pee smells... and I eat it too and don't notice a difference! I am thankful to be one of the group that either can't smell it or doesn't have the smell!!!

I've never smelled the infamous asparagus odor -- so I don't know which group I'm in either!
