Whats your opinion on this?
Let me start off by saying that I’m using a different name because I have lurkers on here.
How would you feel about this…..My mom watches DS while I work. The other day when I went to pick up DS I noticed that his sippy cup has lots of gunk in the straw part, like it hasn’t been really washed that well for a long time. It seems as if the gross stuff in the straw might be food that goes in it when DS drinks (kind of like backwash). Anyway, when I noticed that my DS has been drinking out of this nasty cup, I kind of freaked out on my mom. I didn’t really yell at her, I just stated that it was disgusting and that I didn’t want my DS to drink out of something like that. I feel a bit bad for getting crazy because I’m not the cleanest person in the world so I really can’t preach but when it comes to my child I get a little crazy.
So do you think I was a bit harsh on my mother? Its hard because I am so lucky to have my mom watch DS for such a bargain price, plus, I know that she will never harm him in any way. Sometimes I feel like I have to just let her do whatever because she does this for me. Would you have reacted like that or am I just irrational.

I wouldn't have "freaked," but I would have said something probably sarcastic like "Ma, think you could rinse out the cup?"
I had family watching DD for 20 mos. and bit my tongue many a time because they were doing me a huge favor. You may want to pick your battles, especially if you got loud with her--it's really not a big deal in the scheme of things.

My reaction would be the same as yours. I think its a generation thing. Our parents just dont see things like we do. You can always just bring your own stuff back and forth with you child to use while she babysitting.

Re: Whats your opinion on this?
I'm a clean freak and VERY anal about these things so yes, I would have freaked. I would just apologize to her and ask her nicely if she could throw it in the dishwasher or, if she doesn't have one, then buy her a bottle brush to clean it out. She'll understand if she really thinks about it. She was there once too.

Re: Whats your opinion on this?
Yes, I think that is a bit harsh. My mom watches Steven and it was at her house that I noticed the same thing with the sippy cups. It wasn't bad, but I saw that the top part was getting mold in it I showed my mom and I KNOW she washes his stuff out very well, and she was like So I went home and it was happening to the ones at home too
So, he now gets new sippy cups every few weeks. No matter how much you wash them, they still start to smell and get moldy. I don't know why. And the straw ones are the WORST. We stopped using them.
Maybe just aplogize to your mom and explain to her that you are nervous that DC could get sick and you will be more mindful of giver her new ones to give to DC. And maybe she can tell you when she notices them getting yucky.

I agree. I would maybe show her how to wash the straw part. But I wouldn't freak out on my mom. I know that she wouldn't have meant to harm my child in any way.

Re: Whats your opinion on this?
It was a reaction...maybe go back and apologize to your mom for the way it came out but tell her that you would appreciate if she made sure that his things were washed after each use.
Daycare used to keep my son's spoons and cups each day but I asked to have them back each night to wash. I know they wash them but I after going through the stomach virus with him and seeing how fast it spread around the infant room I wanted to make sure that I washed his things. I'm already washing his bottles and food containers so what was a few more things, right?
