Wiill my taxes go down if...
...I tear down my deck? The house is assessed by the town at $485k...I paid $430K for the house back in Feb (we've already filed a grievance). I was just wondering if you take your deck down, will they lower your taxes?

It won't be significant. I remember I did the numbers a while back as to what Nassau County charges to tax you.
The most expensive item was finished living space obviously. Then a garage. Then a carport. Then things like overhead porches, decks, concrete patios, etc.
Suffolk may be different.

Re: Wiill my taxes go down if...
It depends... many decks don't have CO's on them. Did you file for a permit for the deck? If so, you're paying taxes for it. if it was the previous owner, you would have known at closing if there was a CO for it.
In Suffolk county, as long as it's on cement blocks, they don't tax you. they also don't/can't tax you if they don't know about it!

How do I found out this information? I was looking on the Nassau County website but couldn;t really figure it out.
I would love any links on how property taxes are formulated/assessed in Nassau or Suffiolk.
Sorry if this is considered a thread hijack...

I don't think it would make much of a difference. Decks are typically 15 cents per sq. ft.

I would also be careful about bringing this up.
What if there isn't a CO for this deck on file? They may look to whack you with back taxes even if you tell them it's coming down tomorrow.
