It really doesn't matter how old DC is, but if DC can handle the flow. We just recently switched w/ DS (4 months) but we had tried a few times earlier and he was gagging and the formula was leaking all over.
Just try it, if DC seems to accept it well then it's time. Otherwise wait a few weeks and try again. That's what we did.
ETA: I also noticed that DS was taking a long time (20-30 mins) w/ level 1 to finish his bottles. Now w/ the level 2, he's done in about 10 mins when he's hungry.
