People driving your DC around

Do you let other people besides your immediate family drive your child in town? My sitter (who just started watching DD) needs to pick up her daughter, who by the way is 15 years old from school everyday. Yes, there is a bus for her, but I'm assuming the mom doesn't want her to go on the bus. I'm upset b/c I told her before the job that I was uncomfortable with her driving DD around, unless it was an absolute emergency. Problem is, my DD loves her and is so comfortable with her. I don't want to confuse her and switch sitters, but I'm upset about the situation. Not sure what to do. God, I wish I could be a SAHM Chat Icon

Re: People driving your DC around

Personally, I don't see the big deal. It's not like she'll be driving around town - I assume it's a quick pick-up and then they will be back home.

ETA: Did she mention beforehand that she had to pick her DD up? I could totally see why you would be upset now, since she is changing the rules after getting the job.

Re: People driving your DC around

She never told us in the beginning. I just feel like we've been put on the spot, since according to her, there's no way around it. I prob would have put DD in daycare had I known earlier.

I completely understand why you would be upset, I have someone from my immediate family watching DD and I still don't let them drive her anywhere.

I said there is a 7-11 and a pizzeria on the corner, if you need something.

As long as the person wasn't really old or really young, I wouldn't have a problem with it at all.

Re: People driving your DC around

Honestly I don't know if I would like it.
Only for the fact that right now it is picking up her daughter from school.

In a couple of weeks, it might be now taking that daughter to a friends house, or the library, going to the supermarket or what have you. I would just be afraid it was going to snowball into more Chat Icon

Re: People driving your DC around

I think you have to feel totally comfortable with the person, it doesnt matter if it is a relative or not. We allowed our babysitter to take our son in the car, but I trust her 100%. If there is any doubt in your mind, don't allow it.Chat Icon

Re: People driving your DC around

i've never had a problem with it. Now that my kids are older, I don't see a way around it. They go to their friends, different parents pick up and stuff.

Re: People driving your DC around

With DD#1 I did have a problem with it but over the past 7 years, I have learned that I need to let go a little. I do not love the idea, but I realize that it needs to happen.

Re: People driving your DC around

DS's Kindergarten bus ride was the first time he's ever been in a vehicle that DW or I didn't drive. I realize that in the near future, we'll probably have to have other people drive him once in a while, but we're still not thrilled about it, but I think we're letting go a little at a time.

If I trusted that person enough to leave my child alone with them, I would trust them enough with any situation. If I didn't trust them, I wouldn't leave my child with them full stop. Driving or no.

Same here. I see it this way..my child loves to be with this person, and i'm thankful i could find someone to care for them while i can work that they bonded with, i wouldn't want to break that bond by putting too much conditions on them in fear of losing them.

Re: People driving your DC around

I'm a super-paranoid freak about people driving DD around. The people on this board helped talk some sense into me Chat Icon Chat Icon Only MIL, DH and I drive her around, that's all that's been necessary. I'd let my sister or mother drive her if they wanted/needed to. But it did take me a while to get used to the idea of anyone but DH & I driving her around.

No - I would not allow it.

Beyond the fact that I would only want me and my DH to drive around the baby, if you are paying her to babysit - then she is your employee.

If she had a job in an office like we do, would she ask the boss to leave during the day to pick up her kid? Probably not.

ITA with this...I personally wouldn't leave DD with someone I didn't 100% trust, which would include driving...

BUT in your situation, if it was discussed initially that you didn't want her driving DD, and she did it anyway, I would be VERY upset...Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

As of now i'm not comfortable with anyone driving Rylan around...it hasn't come up yet for us though either so who knows.

I do have to say if I went back to work his aunt would've had him for 3 days and I feel I would've had to let her take him where ever she wanted. I wouldn't expect her to sit home for 3 days.

OK, seriously, you have to watch. I was ok with the local trips. Then it became not telling me exactly where they were and then someone other then the sitter driving my dd. Set your limits now. Dont be a pushover like I was ...it creates a bigger mess.
