Question about IEP students...?
I have 3 classes. In one I have a CTT teacher with a degree in Special Education.
16 out of my 26 students have IEPs or are SETTS in that class.
Since I'm new, I don't really know how it works...but I also think I'm being taken advantage of....because the CTT teacher isn't modifying work or providing services to any of the IEP/SETTS kids.
Should she be? Or are we both supposed to be doing this? I do not have a special ed degree...and while I differentiate as much as possible, I feel like these students are not getting the extra help they need/are required to receive.
Please let me know. Thanks.

Your CTT teacher should be planning lessons with you, teaching some of the lessons, and creating the assessments with you as well.
In addition, together you should be making sure that the SPED students are reaching their bench marks on their IEPs.
You need to have a conversation with her before the school year gets further under way!

First of all, that is a lot of students with IEPs in your classroom. Secondly, your CTT should be planning with you, grading with you, and discussing students with you. In addition he/she should be teaching with you. It really should be a united front in the classroom. I definitely suggest that you speak with him/her ASAP!

I teach in an inclusion setting (elementary though) and our district's model very open, but we teach in a way that neither of us appears to be the lead teacher...we each teach about half of the time...we plan all the lessons together, but I do the modifications to meet the needs of my students...we share all the classroom responsibilities as well (grading, etc.)...I would talk to the CTT about setting up a common time to plan weekly go from there...

First of all, that is a lot of students with IEPs in your classroom.
We're actually thinking it might be a union issue...since that is WAY too many for one class....we're looking into that.
We're definitely trying to do more together...it's a learning process for both of us (neither of us has done CTT before).

If you want to check if your class has too many special education students, look on the IEPs of those students. Under "programs" it will say the type of classroom (integrated I would assume) and give a ratio. It might be something like 12:1, meaning there should be no more than 12 special education students in the room (12 sped students to 1 sped teacher).

i teach CTT min Queens im the gen ed (although i do have SE cert too)
We ( me and spec ed teacher) collaborate on everything. we plan together. there should be mods going on. we teach everything in 2 small groups. this is new for us this year, last year we only did this with Math. But we sometimes do whole group, it all depends on the lesson.
right now i only have 18 students in my class. 7 are SE students. My school only allows 10 SE and 15 gen ed in a CTT and they try to keep out ELLs.
Last year we had 10 SE and 15 Gen ed.
16 SE's is a lot. But does your school have a limit? im not sure if the 10 SE is a rule or if its just my school
as far as providing services, you should BOTh be doing this. YOu dont want to separate them in to SE/Gen ed. you can be working with them to meet their goals as well

I believe NY state law is there can not be more than 50% of the students with IEP's. I would check it out, I believe it went into effect July 1st.

The law states that there cannot be more than 12 students with IEPs in a class. However, districts can apply for a variance which allows for 15 students with IEPs in a classroom. I know because my district has a variance for this year!

Actually in NYC in a CTT our CONTRACT says the ratio is 60% to 40% you are way out of ration! I smell a .....GRIEVANCE!

Is this something really to grieve? If your kids are SETTS then they should have resource room. That may be the only thing it says on their IEP. If it says Resource room they are not considered CTT.
The two groups are viewed differently.
As a person that does scheduling, it is really hard with all of special ed students in school (it seems that there are more and more each year) We don't have the man power/budget to hire another SPED teacher for a push in for an extra two kids.
I think you really need to learn how to work better with your CTT teacher. Is there an established CTT teacher who you can go and observe?

I am in the process of 'learn[ing] how" to work better with the CTT teacher, although we are both doing our best. There are no other CTT teachers in our building, and neither of us has been in a CTT environment before.

Learning the ropes of special education is hard. I am still learning because the rules are continuously changing. However, SETTS and Special Education are the same thing. All SETTS means is that that student gets Resource room one period a day. Not all CTT students are SETTS and not all SETTS are CTT. Usually, they are placed in the same classroom so that the CTT teacher can provide the needed support in the classroom.
Unfortunately, many kids are classified SPED and really can be decertified because they don't need the services. Have you seen all of the IEPs of your students? That will give you a better understanding of who they are and if any of them can be decertified (that is an easier route a lot of the time)
If there is no other CTT teacher in your school, would it be possible to conduct an intervisitiation at another school?
CTT is hard! I know because I ALWAYS have the CTT grade 12 English class and I have yet to have a CTT teacher who was great! Just a serious of bad to worse! However, I have seen CTT where it worked really well!
