Question for HR/Payroll Professionals...
If a company has a pay date of every Wednesday and an employee has direct deposit, is the money supposed to be in their account on Wednesday or is it normal for it to not be in there until the next day. If a person does not have direct deposit, they are handed a check on Wednesday that they can cash. We're trying to settle a debate in our office.
Thanks!

Re: Question for HR/Payroll Professionals...
I'm not HR but in all of my direct deposit jobs the $ has been available the day BEFORE the scheduled pay date! But that may be more to do with the bank than the employer I'm not sure???

Re: Question for HR/Payroll Professionals...
If payday is Wednesday the direct deposit should be available for withdrawal on Wednesday.
Unless there is some provision they signed to say that by taking direct deposit they were going to agree to getting paid one day later.
Our payday is friday - direct deposit hits at 12:01 am on friday.

I looked at our direct deposit forms and there is nothing stating anything about that. Our company cuts the "live" checks on Wednesday but direct deposit does not hit until Thursday. I always thought that was wrong. This week and next week, we're closed on Thursday and Friday because of the holidays and they are cutting the checks on Wednesday but direct deposit isn't hitting until Friday. That just seems so wrong to me.

Same here. Only we are the 15th & the 31st of the month. If it's direct deposit, it is available on payday. If it's a live check, we need to get it to the person on the date of the check.
Also if it's direct deposit, it's an electronic transaction. I'd be surprised that the bank would hold deposits for a full 2 days for an etransaction. Even with banks being closed for the holiday, the funds should be available.
Is this a small company?

It is a larger parent company which has controlling ownership of several smaller companies. One payroll department processes all payroll for everyone.
When I worked as an HR Generalist, any company we worked for always paid us, whether via direct deposit or live check, on the date listed on the check. I always thought it was strange we had to wait a day.

Re: Question for HR/Payroll Professionals...
I do payroll for a 45 employee company and here is how we do it.
They get paid bi-weekly every other friday.
I process the payroll the week prior on thursday, and the check date is for the follow friday. the DD employees get a DD at 12:01am on friday. NO MATTER WHAT. holiday or no holiday the money still transfers. the check stub reflects that the pay week is through the saturday though. All employees that recieve a paper check recieve a date of that friday, even though the check stub says they are paid through Saturday. its just how the pay period works.
I'mn not sure who they use but you can also call the payroll company. I used primepay for most of the year, but we recently switched to paychex. HTH

See that makes sense to me. How our company does it does not make sense. They don't use an outside payroll company and instead have a system that was designed for them to be used only by them. The payroll checks are drawn on Citibank and I have a Citibank account so I called and they said they release the funds to the payee based on what the company tells them to do. I just always found it very strange we have to wait a day and our payroll department says it's because that's when the bank releases the funds. Now I know that's not true.
Thanks for all the responses.

Re: Question for HR/Payroll Professionals...
We had exactly the same issue at work.. and we were both wrong. Turns out our "official" payday is friday and that is when DD goes in. But the outside payroll company processes paperchecks and they arrive at the office on wednesday pm. The office manager was handing them out when he received them and people were cashing them, so we thought, how is it they are getting their money early. Turns out the paperchecks were dated for friday and they shouldn't of have been cashing them. Now, they are handed out on friday too. :)Elise

Re: Question for HR/Payroll Professionals...
If the pay date is wednesday, you should be paid on Wednesday.
My company used 2 different payroll companies over the years. Both required 48 hours for the payroll process (transmission to direct deposit). We could pay an extra fee to have that done in 24 hours. So there's no reason for the delay with proper planning.
When a paydate falls on a holiday employees get paid the day before - not after.
