Alternative treatments for migraines

I am currently taking Imitrex (as needed) but really want/need to stop taking it and seriously looking for alternative treatments (preventative).

I am waiting to get in to see my PCP for more options, but afraid she won't have any.

A friend of mine uses acupuncture for migraines.

I have a prescription for imitrex but I won't use it. I take 3 advils, take alternately hot and cold showers at my head to help the blood vessels contrict and contract, sit in the massage chair, nap when possible, and do nasal irrigation to try to alleviate my migraines. I also try not to oversleep. Certain foods aggravate my migraines too, for me it is sugar, dairy, too many carbs, but it is different for everyone. Avoiding those foods when possible and practicing healthier eating habits have helped tremendously. Some things work better than others at different times so it depends on the headache and the day as to what I will do.
