help me understand
The MIL of one of my coworkers passed away. The funeral was today. A friend of hers decided to take a collection for a basket of flowers?!? Not only a basket of flowers but they're buying it at the florist next door and basically just giving them to her. Is this normal? Do people give other people flowers when a loved one of theirs dies? I've heard of buying one of those big stand up arrangements for a wake but I think a basket of flowers is a little strange, tell me it's not just me.

Re: help me understand
I think it would make more sense for it to go to her home. Are they giving it to her in the office?

I must say I'm with you jess.
If they were sending a fruit basket or food to the home, totally get it...but I don't think of know of anyone who handed someone flowers for their loss.

Right I understand sending it to the house or to the funeral home (I definitely understand that one!) but to just hand it to someone at the office?

oh im sorry - i misunderstood!
no that IS strange! i mean, its just going to be a pain for her to get them home. when you get flowers in the office it is supposed to be for something you WANT everyone to know about like a promotion or something like that - this should be sent so they can be received in private and not lugged around

Re: help me understand
Ive never heard of that. My company always sends flowers to the funeral home not to the person. If i were to send anything to the person, it would be to their house, and it would be food or a mass card.

I personally would never hand deliver flowers to anyone for a loss of a family member

Re: help me understand
I've never heard of anyone being handed a basket or bouquet of flowers for a death in the family. If your coworkers dont want to send it to her house what about just having them on her desk already?

Re: help me understand
I've never heard of a flower "basket", a fruit basket...yes and usually they are sent to the home. I've sent floral arrangements to the funeral home.

ITA.
I have only heard of sending arrangements (normally the big tall ones) for the funeral or something for the home. Never heard of handing someone flowers.

Re: help me understand
I just sent flowers to my friend when her grandmother passed away, and I got a plant from my co-workers when my grandpa passed away...I think it's pretty common!

Re: help me understand
yeah we do it all the time, but send it to the funeral parlor or their home. I really dont think the person really wants to deal with having to get it home.

I'm Jewish too, so I understood what you mean. But when one of my (Catholic) friend's grandmothers died, we sent flowers to the funeral home. Different cultures/religions have different customs.

It is a gesture to let that person know you are thinking of them in their time of need

Re: help me understand
When my grandpa died, we? him? got two baskets of fake flowers. They look really nice, actually. It was the fall and the colors fit in.
They were delivered to the funeral hospital though!

Re: help me understand
At my last job, when my Aunt died my co-workers sent me a very nice fruit basket. I thought that was a nice thought.
