Re: What REALLY happens if you get summoned to jurty duty..but dont go?
I've bee summonsed for jury duty already 3 times
the MOMENT my time is up, I get another summons
have never served on a jury though.
I question the 'peers' thing, though. It takes a certain phenotype to end-up on a jury... (becuase you have to really want it... otherwise it's too easy to answer the questions in a manner that absolves you from the responsibility)
wonder if psychologists ever studied the phenomenon of ending up on a jury vs skirting the responsibility

I'd happily sit on a jury, but I never get that far.

My DH always throws them away
My DH and his parents have consistently thrown theirs away too - I think DH only got a letter once, and his parents have been throwing them away for 40 years. I threw one away on DH's insistence about 4 years ago and then got a follow up letter, saying they would hold me in contempt .. so I went and they scheduled me. I was there a day, got called to be questioned, and they told me to go home.

Re: What REALLY happens if you get summoned to jurty duty..but dont go?
I have only lived on LI for 2.5 years and I got a jury duty notice a few months ago. I stuffed it in my purse and completely forgot to call on that day I was supposed to. We did it differently in thje Bronx. I found the notice like a week or 2 later. I hope they will just call me again, I felt so bad, I didn't know what to do. I ALWAYS went when I lived in the Bronx. I hope I just get another and I am not in trouble. I guess I should have called when I found the notice but I didn't, I figured what was the point .

I got one and since I"m a SAHM I had to drag my kids to the court to deal with the summons.
They got all pissy with me that I had the kids.........ummmm, what would you like me to do with them? I tried dealing with it over the phone but they insisted I come in.
I can't win

I'm the same way. I get called all the time. I got called for Nassau, moved to suffolk and got called right away for Suffolk. Then followed by Federal in Brooklyn
I question the randomness of it all. The fact that other people have never been called.
Of all the times I've been called I only actually served on a jury once. It settled in 3 days. I think it would be interesting to serve on a jury and listen to a trial.

Re: What REALLY happens if you get summoned to jurty duty..but dont go?
I think it's funny how many people have never served. I've been called 4 times and sat on three cases. I love the process, I think it's such an integral part of our country's system and have always been proud to be a part of it.

Re: What REALLY happens if you get summoned to jurty duty..but dont go?
I understand both sides. I;m a litigator and have picked juries, and tried cases in front of juries. Its an important part of our legal system. If you want fairness and justice, the jury system is the best way to go. If you want an elite, educated, mostly white-middle aged - and sometimes corrupt single person (mostly male outside NYC) deciding your fate- then by all means, give up the jury system. But if you want justice, we need juries and that includes EVERY ONE OF US to do our part.
As a lawyer who bills hours, if I am out of work for jury duty, I have to make up that time for my annual billable requirement- so i defintely understand the aggravation of it. But I'd rather be aggravated for 2 days every 6 years and have the jury system, than not.

I honestly have never been called in all my 33 years. Just never got a summons.
Now that I said that I'm sure I'll be called tomorrow!

Weren't you instructed NOT to do any of your own research into this case? That would include research into the law firms representing the clients...

I thought that too.
I understand the urge to research but you may have just given reason the defendant for a mistrial - and the juge a reason to hold you in contempt.

She posted on the previous page that the case has already been settled. It's over.
