Do you get yearly raises?
Do you get automatic yearly raises or do you have to ask for a raise? I just had my 1 year anniversary at work and we get automatic raises on our anniversary. But its literally peanuts. My coworkers say that their reasoning is that people stay with the company for a long time...some for like 25 years! so they have to give minimal automatic raises or else people would make too much too quickly and eventually look to leave. They actually even cap peoples salaries that have been with the company more than 20 years.
I'm just not impressed with the raise and was wondering if this was "normal"?

Re: Do you get yearly raises?
We're eligible for "bonuses" but everytime one is supposed to come around, we are all told that the company didn't bring in enough business.
I don't really believe THAT at all.
A couple of my co-workers who have been there longer than me said that the last time anyone got bonuses it was like $50.00 per person.
In human services, traditionally, there are not really raises. Usually your "raise" is leaving if you are able to find a job that pays higher.
Fortunately, this is looked at as normal in my field, that many people move on for "professional development".

Re: Do you get yearly raises?
My firm has lock step annual raises. We know the salary scale and everyone in the same seniority level gets the same raise.
Not sure if they will change that in the future, given a lot of the turmoil and layoffs in my industry... but this is how it has been for quite some time.

Re: Do you get yearly raises?
My company normally does reviews and merit increases in January, but this year they've been pushed back. A few select people did get a small increase though (I was one of them, that's the only reason I know about it!) but everyone else is getting pretty restless. My DH's company (a large bank) has had a salary freeze for the past year and it may be extended for another year. Needless to say, people are NOT happy. They did still get year-end bonuses though, which is much better than nothing.
The economy is really screwing with us!

Re: Do you get yearly raises?
Same with us -- I am another large law firm. But we unfortunately had a salary freeze early this year, and THEN we had an across the board 10% cut. So I am not exactly concerned with getting a raise this year or next, I am more concerned with keeping my job.

we usually get yearly increases but this year we didn't. Probably not next year either.
Frankly, any raise in this economy is great.

Re: Do you get yearly raises?
No raise at all this year. No one has said anything about next year yet, but it wouldnt surprise me if they decided not to do raises next year either.
The company is not doing too well, and we have continual layoffs. I consider the fact that I still have a job my "raise"

Re: Do you get yearly raises?
Before the economy failed, we'd get a yearly rasie,as well as quarterly and annual bonuses.

Re: Do you get yearly raises?
I received yearly raises with my reviews. But I know alot of companies are freezing employees raises due to the economy so some people are just happy they have a paycheck more than a raise.

I was going to say the same thing.
We get a certain percentage range each year - thsi year it was 2-3%. If you were promoted or were able to show a drastic change in job responsibilities, you got more.

Re: Do you get yearly raises?
My company normally does annual raises. The maximum is 5%, which is what I received last year. This year raises are on a hold for at least 6 months.
