Screaming During Feedings

DD is 2 months old and within the past week has started screaming during bottle feedings. The only way to get her to eat is to offer a binky, wait until she is half asleep, and then sneak the bottle in. She is FF and has always eaten very well up until now. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. TIA!

Re: Screaming During Feedings

DD started doing the same thing at around 2 months. We had to switch her to Nutramigen Ready to Feed. It helped a little but she always had trouble with her bottles. She is now 3 yrs old and still not much of an eater. DS is 6 months old and has started doing the same thing. I just switched his formula from Kirkland to Good Start and haven't seen a change. It can be very frustrating and I often dread feeding time. I would let the Ped know, but in my case, there isn't much to do except look forward to when he is done with formula. Good luck and hang in there.

Do you think she may have an ear-ache ? How is she when laying down ?
And you didnt mention spitting up or anything, never had any refux issues right?

Its a little early, but not impossible that it could be early teething also...Its so hard when they can't tell you whats wrong Chat Icon

Re: Screaming During Feedings

are you waiting to long to feed her so that maybe she is over hungry and can't get food fast enough?

You could try going up a size in nipple flow....

Re: Screaming During Feedings

This happened to DD too at around 2 months. She is breastfed though... I think she was just getting used to the flow of milk (too slow or too fast and it annoyed her). t it could be reflux.. or maybe she is over hungry like pp said. The phase passed pretty quickly for DD, but it was so frustrating while it was happening.. I dreaded feedings for a few weeks because of it. Hang in there!

Re: Screaming During Feedings

Possible milk allergy?
Maybe the nipple flow is too strong or too weak?
Gas?
Angle at which you are feeding dc?

Re: Screaming During Feedings

DS did this around 9 weeks. He would take a few ounces and then start screaming. We moved up a nipple size and he was good to go!

I tried moving up a nipple size with no success. I also tried more frequent feedings thinking she might be overly hungry but this also did not work. DD is also very irregular with BM's and has a lot of gas. We added prune/pear juice to her bottle to help with irregularity and it seems like the fussing started when we did this. Has anyone else had this problem?

I also suspect reflux since she has always spit up alot. I see ped on Wednesday and will discuss possibly changing formula. DH and I dread feeding her at this point. It's a total disaster.

My DD was doing this also. It was really confusing because she wouldn't do it ALL of the time and sometimes she would just refuse it. We ended up switching to Nutramagen and we still didn't see much of a difference. Then our ped put her on Ranitidine (supposed to be similar to Zantac) combined with the Nutramagen and feedings became MUCH easier.

I understand how you feel. I used to DREAD feeding time. Chat Icon

Re: Screaming During Feedings

i had the same thing happening with Emma - she would lurch off of my body - screaming and make the 'scream mask' face....she was in such pain....

step 1 - we started using Playtex Ventaire bottles - made for gas & problems...

step 2 - we switched to soy formula and have had good success with it.

step 3 - we give her a dose of mylicon before each feeding - and that helps IMMENSELY...she burps SO much easier when we do that...

i know the pain you are going through - and while i'm not out of the 'woods' yet - i can promise you that once you find the right 'combo' - it will get better. It's so hard dreading feeding - since at this age - all they do is eat, sleep and poop...and eating is what they do most. my heart used to crack EVERY SINGLE TIME i fed her - since i felt so helpless...

if you need someone to talk to - please, feel free to fm me - i have been there...and hesitate to say that i'm done with that phase because it scarred me....

DS was the exact same way at 2 months. It ended up being from reflux. Ped put him on zantac which helped so much. Chat Icon

Same here - she eventually stopped after about a week or so.
