Colicky baby HELP
So we are pretty sure that DS is colicky Every night from midnight to around 5am he is inconsolable. We have tried everything, even 4 of the 5 S's (not the pacifier one because he had horrible nipple confusion when they gave him one in the hospital). It is horrible to see him in such agony. It's obvious he is suffering from trapped gas and the mylicon does not help. I honestly feel like pitching myself down the stairs when he has been crying for hours How did you get through it?? I need hugs
ETA: I also noticed that he might be choking on my letdown which may be too forceful for him and is producing gas so I started feeding him more upright, that's not helping either though.

Re: Colicky baby HELP
I would check in with your doctor again to rule out a problem like reflux. But it could just be gas also, or constipation. DS had both.
I used to bicycle his legs around and gently lift his knees up to his belly to help with gas. His pediatrician said to try chammomile tea also, but I'm not so sure it did much for him. He wouldn't drink it straight, I mixed it in with formula.
I'm guessing you have read "Happiest Baby" since you know about the 5Ss. Just keep doing these things. The other thing that helped DS sometimes was to plop him in the car and drive around for a bit. He would often fall asleep like that. Or putting him in his baby carrier and walking him around the house.
Good luck! I hope you find some thing that works. This does tend to pass around 3 or 4 months, but it is an eternity when it is happening.

Re: Colicky baby HELP
this worked for us with Emma - she'd be insane crying and then we'd put her on this and she'd calm immediately.

the white noise part is BS - there's little noise - but the massaging on her tummy worked wonders!

eta: I would be happy to lend this to you - let me know what you think!

Re: Colicky baby HELP
I just want to give you hugs and tell you I am going through the same thing. My DS was up last night from 9pm to 5:30 am!! The only thing getting me through is knowing that it won't last forever!!!!

Re: Colicky baby HELP
Many hugs because dealing with a colicy baby is one of the worst feelings Gripe water worked way better than mylicon for us. Also dont be afraid to try things over an over again even if they don't seem to work in the beginning. Like our swing, she hated it in the beginning, but a few weeks later, it was one of the only things that could calm her down. Same goes for the swaddle, she couldn't stand it in the beginning but a few weeks later it really calmed her. The happiest baby on the block saved us many times, so even if it doesn't work right away try it again in a few days and maybe it will help...
eta I thought it would be TERRIBLE until 3 months because I had read that colic usually lasts that long, but things got DRAMATICALLY better with my dd at around 6 weeks, so just know that it COULD get better as quick as it came on

Re: Colicky baby HELP
To help with forceful letdown, try nursing him while leaning back. It helps to slow the flow. Or, try expressing a little milk before nursing.

Re: Colicky baby HELP
You mentioned forceful letdown so I'll ask - do you have a really large milk supply? Sometimes with a forceful letdown and a lot of milk you can get a foremilk/hindmilk imbalance where the baby is getting a lot of foremilk really fast and getting full quickly, but not staying full, and getting gassy too. There are other symptoms associated with it too like green, mucousy poop. You can look it up and see if that might be it.
Also, what worked wonders for us was running the vacuum cleaner. DD had a nasty witching hour until she was about 12 weeks old and the vacuum was about the only thing that worked.

Re: Colicky baby HELP
gripe water helped fennel tea chamomile tea
most of these need to be taken with a bottle so i am not sure how well it will work for you, unless you can get your little guy to take it off a spoon or a syringe.
also try the swing, if you havent already with the vacuum next to it

Re: Colicky baby HELP
We are still going through issues. DS has colic, mainly because of really bad reflux. The 2 things that helped a lot at night are the miracle blanket and a white noise machine.
Now he is just cranky during the day...
