abnormal ultrasreen (Update)
Update: Well we spoke to a Genetic counselor today. And it looks like our highs are pretty high for a child with down syndrome. 1in 5 chance. So after thinking and soul searching we decided to do the CVS. I just don't want to go through this whole pregnancy stressing about what could or could not be. So this way we can prepare for what is to come.
Has anyone every had one? My doctor just called and said my ultra-screen was abnormal. The blood work hasn't come back yet but from the ultrasound it is abnormal.

Re: abnormal ultrasreen
The first thing I would ask is what about the ultrasound is abnormal? Was it the measurement of the nuchal fold? I know plenty of women that have had not so great ultrascreen numbers that had perfectly fine babies.

Re: abnormal ultrasreen
Also wanted to add that you should feel free to ask your question on the parenting board if you haven't already as you will have a large group of women there who already went through their pregnancies and might offer more advice.

Re: abnormal ultrasreen
I know its really rough, But I know a couple of girls that got irregular readings on the several different prenatal tests, and have their little ones come into the world just fine. Try to have hope, and faith. And get a second opinion.

Re: abnormal ultrasreen
My aunt's SIL had an abnormal ultrascreen and they were telling her that her baby almost certainly had Down's Syndrome and that she should abort (!!!). Well she's a happy, healthy 8 year old now so those tests aren't always accurate. I know it's easier said than done but don't place too much stock in tests that are done on a little tiny baby whose in mommy's belly so deep you can't even feel her yet.

Re: abnormal ultrasreen
Did they tell you what about it was abnormal?
My ultrasound measurements came back fine, but my bloodwork came back with 12x elevated levels for DS. In the end all was fine.
Remember its just a screening, not a diagnostic test. That said, find out more details ASAP, the doctor should be walking you through all this!

Re: abnormal ultrasreen
my ultrascreen came back normal but my level II came back as abnormal. They look for "soft" markers which dont really mean anything honestly. I was freaking out bc the covering dr (my dr was at a conference) came in after my level II and started talking about downs and amnio. I was sent to a genetic councelor who told me these screening tests are only that : screening. Especially with the sono the tech has to be skilled and there is alot of room for error (depending on the babys position or tech skill) I had a second sono done by a different tech and everything all of a sudden looked normal.
I know its easier said than done but try not to freak out until u speak to ur dr and get all the results... remember its just a screening test
good luck ur in my thougths and prayers

ITA. And then get a 3rd opinion, too. Lots of tests can be wrong, but try to not to worry until you know more...

Re: abnormal ultrasreen
Don't worry yet! That test is not that accurate. The rate of abnormals it finds is much higher than actual abnormals. Subsequent blood tests will be much more definitive. And only when doctor is worried, then you worry. Keep this rule and you will have a very sane pregnancy

Re: abnormal ultrasreen
Definitely ask what made it look abnormal...but i have heard this screening is flawed. I got back the 2nd time tomorrow for it and I have to keep reminding myself of this.

Re: abnormal ultrasreen
Thank you ladies for all your advise and well wishes. We are going to go see a genetic counselor on Friday just to hear what the full results are and what they mean. In the end, I am committed to having this baby and my husband and I have decided we will not do any further testing that could put me or the baby at risk. We love him or her very much and are prepared to deal with whatever happens.
