The only reason I got one was because of Pre-e. My midwife doesn't deem them necessary. They are highly innacurrate.

i agree!! definitely not necessary. if your OB deems one necessary (such as your belly is measuring exceptionally big) then i would consider it but not otherwise.

Re: is it really absolutely necessary...
I'm not having one. It's an elective sono that has become the standard in most practices, but it's not necessary. Most skilled providers can better guage the size/weight of the baby on palpation.

No they are not... Our Midwife doesn't do them unless deemed necessary and I couldn't agree more about inaccuracy from our experience last Pregnancy...

I will be having growth sonos done by a peri, but only because I have a 2 vessel umbilical cord and they need to watch the baby's growth more carefully.

Re: is it really absolutely necessary...
Totally not necessary. I had one because of my GD, but like previous posters said they're highly inaccurate - so really what's the point?

Re: is it really absolutely necessary...
In my opinion, yes, they are necessary because otherwise, I never would have known my DD was breech and that I needed a c-section.

I never would have known my DD was breech and that I needed a c-section. I think that the doctor would have been able to feel that. They can tell immediately where all the body parts are just by pressing properly. My cousin tickled an elbow last week....no sono required. I suppose it is good to confirm what the doctor thinks he/she feels though.

My OB doesn't do them - he doesn't do any sonos after 20 wks unless there is a reason to...

Re: is it really absolutely necessary...
They are only necessary if you are measuring big or small (I was measuring small) or if you have a medical condition.
The OB can feel if DC is breech

Ok, not for nothing, but I don't think I'd take a doctor feeling my belly over a sono. I agree, I think growth sonos are important.

Re: is it really absolutely necessary...
i don't think anyone can tell you if it is or isn't necessary other than your doctor. ask him/her why they want you to have one and go from there.
