Bumpers or not?
So many people are telling me NOT to consider bumpers....I'm curious to see if any of you are leaning towards buying them or NOT buying them.

Re: Bumpers or not?
Do most sets come with breathable bumpers now or do you have to buy them seperately?

Re: Bumpers or not?
I bought mine separately.
I didn't buy a bedding set, I bought the breathable bumpers and a crib skirt. Someone made us a really nice quilt.

Re: Bumpers or not?
I got a bedding set that hjad bumpers. The bumpers were put in the crib for decoration only while DD was in the cosleeper. Once she went into the crib, the bumpers came out.
Real bumpers are a known SIDS risk, so I only used breathable bumpers. Neither of my DD's ever bumped their heads on the crib s;lats, and the breathable bumpers kept their little arms and legs in just fine.

Re: Bumpers or not?
So what exactly is a bumper?
I'm new to this whole thing... so I'm going to sound like the biggest dope on most of the threads here.
Is it the quilt like piece that goes on the side of the bed?? Or is it something else?

Re: Bumpers or not?
Bumpers are the padded pieces that go around the perimeter of the inside of the crib, right about the mattress. They come with bedding sets and accent the set. They are a SIDS risk so that's why I was wondering what people are doing these days :)
Looks like it's breathable bumpers! Thanks for the insight!

Re: Bumpers or not?
We have bumpers and plan to use them. I feel comfortable with them, but it is a personal decision as well.

I will not be using them at first. Once DC is older & flipping all over the place then I might to protect their little melon. It freaks me out.

Re: Bumpers or not?
Mine came with the set, but I bought breathable ones that match. They are a mesh that prevents the baby from getting caught in the bars, but if he rolls over onto them, he won't sufficate.

we did the same with ds and intend on using the again with this baby... he was all over the crib from day 1 and now, at 14 months, i took them out because he is climbing and all i hear is him banging his head randomly throughout the night...

Re: Bumpers or not?
We will not be using regular bumpers. We are getting a breatheable bumper, crib skirt, crib sheets, and will be using sleep sacks instead of blankets. The risk is not worth it to me.

Although there is no 100% known reason for SIDS, the incidence of SIDS has decreased by more than 50% in the last 20 or so years since they started recommending that babies be laid ONLY on their backs.
They reason that laying babies on their tummies before they have control to lift their heads etc., and using bumpers can cause SIDS - a baby doesn't necessarily suffocate from being face down or having their face up against a bumper, BUT instead of breathing in oxygen, they breathe in the carbon dioxide that they have been breathing out. And that is said to be the cause.

Same here. To me, regular bumpers are not worth the risk of SIDS

Re: Bumpers or not?
I haven't given it too much thought, yet... but I happened to read about bumpers the other night somewhere online. I guess babies of all ages like to bang their heads against the crib because it reminds them of being cramped up in the womb! I guess I'll use the breathable ones, unless my baby is mover and banger, in which case the padded ones make more sense!

DD is a mover and a banger and I still used the breathable ones. She never hurt herself banging her head.
