Sending Resumes
I just graduated with my masters. I have checked OLAS, but also figured it would be a good idea to just send my resume out to school districts in the event that any positions become available (I am certified in special education grades 1-6 and general education grades 1-6.) Should I send along a cover letter as well, or is that unnecessary since I am not applying for a posted opening. I have received conflicting opionions from friends and I am not sure what to do.
Thanks for the help.

Re: Sending Resumes
I think it's good to send a cover letter, it gives more info about what you are looking for. Maybe I'm wrong, but I can't see how it could hurt.

Re: Sending Resumes
I would send a cover letter with the Principal's name on it--seems more personal

agreed....
however, i hate to be a Debbie Downer, but school districts gets hundreds of resumes and I really don't think they are going through any of them unless they truly have a vacancy. that strategy never worked for me. the only time i got called for an interview was when i applied for a specific position they advertised. the "here's my resume just because" never worked for me and many other people i know.
you also need to be stalking nytimes.com (The Week in Review Section if you read the print edition). Ed. positions are updated every weekend. most districts advertise there ONCE and they have more than enough exposure. several years ago, for the position i have now, it was advertised there ONE time in FEBRUARY--- i wasn't interviewed until May and then got the job in June. my now colleagues who interviewed me said they got hundreds of applications for that job from onyl putting in the ad. once . you have to JUMP on it right away. I literally mailed in my resume the next day and i think that helped me get my resume to the top of the pile.
good luck---it's tough out there!

Re: Sending Resumes
Many LI and Westchester districts have online applications; they won't accept a hard copy of a resume/cover letter. Save the stamp and the resume paper and apply online if that's what they're asking for.
I sent a million individual resumes and cover letters to NYC schools, and that worked well for me - but now they're in the middle of a hiring freeze.
