Questions for those of you who don't eat processed food

What do you eat?

What do you cut out? What were you eating before that you now no longer eat?

Any vegetarians who did this?

Thanks!!!

Re: Questions for those of you who don't eat processed food

Thanks Kara - I am pretty good with what I eat, but wanted to clean up my diet a little. I certainly don't diet but I like to make healthy changes. I have been feeling run down lately and I know I am not eating as healthy as I can....

Re: Questions for those of you who don't eat processed food

I don't eat eggs, but I get everything I need nutrition wise from raw nuts, fruit, veggies, quinoa, edamame, things like that. It's just when I'm lazy I eat soy nuggets - basically vegetarian crap food. We have a juicer so at night I am going to have a green juice for dinner since I get home late, and possibly make a morning juice if I have time.

Are fiber cereals considered "processed"? I love Autumn Wheat.....

For you I can't imagine how you would do it as a vegan!! I respect that and know it's got to be so difficult for you to find things to eat!!

I will say I definitely am not ever hungry and when I wasn't working 15 hours a day I wasn't tired!

OH! I left out a major thing I eat... DH makes these 'bars' that are almond meal, dried cranberries, dried blueberries, eggs, coconut, raw organic almond butter ... i forget what else is in it & he also makes these banana coconut ones... do you eat eggs?? I know you didn't in the past but I'll email you the recipes if you do!

Would you FM me these recipes?Chat Icon

I have been bad about it, but I did try to cut out a lot of processed foods when DS#1 was born (by #2 it was just too hard to resist Chat Icon the convenience)

I'm pretty sure you are in the E Npt area...have you ever tried Makinajian farms? I see you don't eat eggs, but their chickens are right there and you can look at their conditions. but they grow a lot of their own organic produce and sell goods made by them or by others who they trust. (ie they sell bread made by a bakery on LI that is just the basic ingredients and is tasty!)

ETA: they are on the corner of Little Plains and Cuba Hill

I am a vegan and I do not eat processed food.
I eat alot of salad, beans, lentils, tofu, textured soy protein, and soups.
I also do not use anything that has animal products for clothing, shoes, cleaning supplies and cosmetics.

If you go to Wild By Nature,Trader Joes
or Whole foods you will find alot.

Good luck.

I am vegan too! I have been for 13 years, but I have definitely slacked onw earing animal products (I do wear some leather Chat Icon ) but I won't use it in beauty products..... I go to WBN, TJ's and WF.... Those are the only placesd we shop (sometimes Stop N Shop because they have an all natural section)

I eat the way you do - but I always like to think of ways to clean up my diet.... I really see most soy products/ textured vegetable protein as processed because it really isn't "natural"....

Have you tried using/cooking with a dehydrator? You can make all sorts of wonderful all natural things with it. Check out this raw vegan website:

How about beans, rice or any other grains.

What else can we do?

Re: Questions for those of you who don't eat processed food

I USED to eat: Fat Free chips, FF cheese, FF cookies, Regular Pasta, FF Ice Cream

I NOW don't touch any of that and eat: Organic Pita Chips, Whole Wheat Organic Pasta (Luigi Vitelli--you can get it cheap at the Christmas Tree Shoppe), for dessert, organic stonyfield yogurt works. Try Chocolate Underground instead of chocolate ice cream.

I also haven't touched soda in months. WAY TOO many chemicals for me. And I used to love diet soda. Now, I drink naturally flavored Seltzer OR plain seltzer with a splash or organic cranberry juice. Make sure you get organic cranberry juice, though. You can't get Ocean Spray or anything. That stuff is just as bad as soda.

I used to eat light bread---now I eat whole grain or multi grain.

I don't eat ice cream or snacks. Occasionally pita chips or whole wheat pretzels with hummos.

I don't drink soda or juice - only water or if I do have juice it's from a juicer.... fresh green juices (I have a juicer - I juice kale, chard, cucumber, etc - green veggies).

We only eat whole wheat/whole grain in our house. Nothing white - brown rice, etc...

I don't do fat free or sugar free anything!!!

Guess I'm doing ok!!! Chat Icon I was thinking I wanted to get away from processed soy products (veggie nuggets, burgers, etc) but I don't really eat them that often.....

Sounds like you are doing really well.

Jillian Michaels also says to avoid any food with the words "hydrogenated" or "Partially hydrogenated."

I follow the rule of thumb that the more ingredients something has...the worse it is for you.

Re: Questions for those of you who don't eat processed food

I happened to see a mag at B&N the other day called "Clean Eating" which then prompted me to buy "Idiots Guide to Clean Eating" but I'm still looking through it!

I'd really like to be eating "clean" once the baby starts eating table food (I make her purees and try to keep anything else - teething cookies, etc - organic).
