Surgery & Draining Tubes...(ew)

I have to have my thryoid lobe taken out, and was informed today that I will have one of those tube things that drain fluid from it...it will have to be emptied every 24 hours.

i know they do this with a lot of surgeries...but how gross is it, really?

I had a dermal cyst removed from my chin about 10 years ago and had the drain in there for about 2 days. Honestly , it really wasn't that bad. It's a little tube that is connected to a hose that ends in a little bag that was pinned to my hospital gown while i was in the hospital. Then after i went home, i was mainly resting still so it just hung out with me. then I went back in a day to have it removed
It was more intriguing to me than gross Chat Icon

Thanks!
my surgeon said to think of it as a nice purse, hanging from my body, but I couldn't picture some fluid-filled sac as a good fashion statement. Chat Icon

Is the bag big?

Its not bad at all, I wish I had had one following my c-section in March, instead of having a nice little sort of plastic pouch hanging from my incision, I had a HUGE amount of leakage from the wound...the drain is the best option if you ask me! It was horrid to be leaking as much as I was...gross. Good luck!

I had it when I had my gallbladder out. it isn't that bad. The tubing went WAY far into my stomach cavity so it was painful but the gross factor was just ehh.

I had my thyroid removed and had a drainage tube from my neck. The bag was clipped to my hospital gown. It didn't hurt, but I was paranoid that the bag was going to fall and pull the tube out of my neck, lol. It wasn't bad though.

I had a tube in for a day or two when I had a breast reduction and it wasn't gross. I had my husband empty it and he said it wasn't bad. I didn't even notice it really but the only bad thing about it was getting it removed... it hurt sooo bad. But I don't think this size tube would pertain to your surgery so it won't hurt like that. Good luck !!

Re: Surgery & Draining Tubes...(ew)

Its not too gross, it won't be spilling onto you or filling up that quickly so you will only have to drain small amounts of fluid.

Think of the bright side, since all that fluid is going to come out, it won't be sitting under your skin causing swelling and bruising which takes a LONG time to go away.

Good luck with your surgery!

I had it deep in my stomach after my 2nd c-section. It was a bit sore but the actual drainage was not too bad....the nurses took care of it but I saw the bag whenever I went to pee Chat Icon
