Sorry you voted no. This was a very critical year and you should realize that your taxes will go up regardless. Your no vote just seals the deal on cuts to programs not your taxes. Chat Icon

I understand. Its makes me mad actually its not like our taxes are low you know what I mean. We pay more than island trees and hicksville and yet we have all these cuts and petitions. I am really aggravated with the district right now.

Re: Levittown School district residents budget vote?

I work for the district and hope it passes to save my job, i work in the records dept, and will be cut if it fails. I am praying because I carry the health insurance for my family and my Dh was unemployed and just found part time work. I have been with the district 9 years and it will be so hard to start all over....My step dad is also part of the district. He is a teacher at GC tech, he is scared that he will be out a job since they told the teachers here they would close down the school. Its really sad for the community and the children I feel like whether it passes or fails the children always get screwed.Chat Icon

Re: Levittown School district residents budget vote?

i can't believe that they would cut so much stuff over 6%. i feel there was major major administrative issues that they should clean up first before hiriing/ firing laying off etc...

hey - maybe they should shut off the sprinkler system when it's raining, or turning off the track lights at a certain time.
conserving in these manners may help someone keep their job.

Oh my I am so sorry. For what its worth the parents are really trying to rally this year so there is hope. I heard that a lot of staff will be cut if the vote does not pass. Worse this year than last. I do think there seems to be some mis management of funds going on...but JMO

I do not live there anymore, but I know my parents and 3 siblings are all voting yes. I remember the last time the budget was not passed - I was in 8th grade and while they did not cut sports, they did make students pay to participate in them. There was also no late bus that year. I am sure other things were cut as well, but as an 8th grader those are the things I remember.

It is impossible for budgets not to increase. Just like the COL goes up for you, it goes up for a school. PLUS this year the state is cutting aid to schools. Also, since the state budget is not passed yet there is an excellent chance that taxes will not increase as much as they are anticipating.

a 6% increase is ridiculous. I don't even live in the district and I am outraged.

What is causing the increase?

I am not on the up and up with the Levittown budget, but I am sure most of it has to do with the drastic cuts in state aid. To carry over last year's budget without factoring in raises and general expense increases would have meant a 13% tax raise in my district. My district cut it to 2.5% by reducing supply budgets, laying off 36 people, eliminating field trips, cutting sports, cutting programs, etc. Additionally, they had an increase in commercial properties, which helped to reduce the resident tax rate.

For everyone who is voting against the budget, I strongly suggest next year you go to BOE meetings for two reasons 1. you can find out what they are spending your money on and 2. you can part of the decision making team, which determines how and what the money gets spent on.

I dont believe it is 6%. Where did you see that? I voted yes....and I do not understand why you would vote No. Your taxes are going to go up regardless. The difference that they will go up is not much of a difference if the budget doesnt pass.

ITA and I voted the same way! I don't even have kids yet but I wanted to make sure that when I do have kids in the SD that the programs that should be there will be there.

the budget was to increase by 6% however the tax levy was less than 3.5%

Hopefully the re-vote will pass since it was such a narrow margin

I wasn't registered yet - didn't get to it in time, as I just moved to the district. I feel so guilty. Chat Icon

One important reason I moved to this district was for the quality schools. I understand that to get a great education - the best teachers, technology in the classroom, electives in languages and the arts - you have to pay for it. I could have stayed in Brooklyn and paid like $2500 a year in property taxes and sent my kids to an NYC public school (where I taught for 6 years) but I chose to pay into this system, with the understanding that costs go up each year.

I am a teacher, but I'm a taxpayer too and I completely understand the frustration with wasteful spending and administrator excess. I do. But I will take it out on the elected board members, not the kids.

Now, how do I get myself registered so I can participate in the re-vote?

Re: Levittown School district residents budget vote?

I don't understand how anyone could justify a 6% increase, when the superintendent is making well over $300k. Plus I heard that last year they spent thousands of dollars installing a "bedroom, and private bathroom" in MacArthur HS for when either him or the principal needs to stay overnight due to late night meetings and such??? I just don't understand LI.
I'm sorry that programs "might" be cut, or that teachers "might" be laid off, but why can't all of the teachers and administrators agree not to take the 3.5% raise this year?? Not everyone who works is guaranteed a raise every year. Why should teachers be any different.
I just hope that the re-vote gets denied as well. If this passes, next year they'll be asking for more and more. When will it end.

Re: Levittown School district residents budget vote?

I love this concept of re-vote. Why is there is no re-vote when it passes? It is only when the outcome is not to the liking of the unions do we need to think it over again.

I hope more people come out and vote against it. It is a cycle that has to end. It is unreal that there are over 110 school districts on long island each with superintendents that make over 250k. Glorified principals with questionable credentials.

Please just stop the fear mongering...oh the poor children are going to suffer. All the school had to do is be more in line within every other district..they could have said a total raise of budget by 3% and people would have accepted it.

All I have to say is I have been on a salary freeze for 2 years now, why do I have to do it and teachers don't, I think that would save them a lot of money as well

Re: Levittown School district residents budget vote?

Just a tidbit on how the superintendent spent your money...

From
http://www.antonnews.com/levittowntribune/news/3429-levittown-superintendent-dr-herman-sirois-to-resign-in-2011.html

Further stirring controversy was the revelation that Dr. Sirois’ office had undergone extensive renovations, which one estimate priced at $140,000, around the same time as the discovery of the deficit. The office had been refurbished to include a shower and washer/dryer, as well as such embellishments as wall-to-wall carpeting and mahogany window trims. The renovations had been unanimously approved by the board the year before

But that isnt a problem specific to levittown, all districts state aid has been cut.

I agree with you on what the superintendent makes. Its more than the president..lol But Just so you know the teachers were willing to take the pay freeze, my father is one of them. Their union said NO to it! He said his union sucks! They were fighting really hard to get the union to agree to it but they wouldnt budge. I am in the csea union and have said i would cut my pay by $10,000 to save my job. and I dont make much. I just really need my benefits and my job for my newborn baby so she can have a place to live and eat. So iam praying really hard it passes the second time around.
