Dressing a newborn in summer
For all you ladies having a summer baby, how do you plan on dressing your newborn both indoors and outdoors? Do you have to put a onesie underneath each outfit or PJ? I will probably have the AC on in the house. Just curious to see how to dress baby within the first few weeks without overdressing him. Thanks!

Re: Dressing a newborn in summer
Honestly, I have no idea but I have a bunch of onesies to put underneath his clothes, some socks and my favorite swaddles for sleeping... I think he'll be fine, even with the AC since it gets so hot in my apartment.
It was a lot easier having a winter baby!!

Re: Dressing a newborn in summer
DD1 was born in late June. We kept the a/c on but we didn't keep the house very cool/cold (maybe low to mid 70's). She mostly wore onesies and those one pieces that look like dresses from carters. I would keep a blanket or extra layer with me when we were out, if it was cold. she slept in a diaper and miracle blanket most of the time. when she napped she was either swaddled or i put a light receiving blanket over her (since she couldn't roll or go anywhere yet).

Re: Dressing a newborn in summer
I had my first son in June, I followed the rule of dressing a baby one more layer than myself...

It's only true that you should dress the baby in one more layer than you would normally wear in the COLD. When it's hot, you should dress the baby how you would dress. Babies can overheat quickly. So, for outside, dress him/her how you would be comfortable. I had a May and she was generally in little one piece romper-type sleeveless things for outside...or shorts, whatever. NO onesie.
Inside, though, if you use the a/c I would think long sleeves/pants would be appropriate--depending on how cold you like it.

I have been wondering this too...especially for sleeping, since I don't want to bundle them too much for fear of over heating. Thanks for asking it!

Re: Dressing a newborn in summer
When we went to the Baby Care class, the lady who taught said that babies have a very hard time regulating their body temperature and that if you're hot, so are they. Same with cold.
So just be careful not to overdress him/her.

Re: Dressing a newborn in summer
Pediatrician told my SIL dress the baby the same way you are dressed. Many times people overheat them by dressing them too warm.

Re: Dressing a newborn in summer
But what if you want to swaddle them for sleeping? Is that still ok? I got the lightweight cotton Swaddle Me's for summer- can I use that if I leave her in just a diaper and that?

Re: Dressing a newborn in summer
I think if you're in the AC, footie pajamas are ususally great, they have terry cloth ones from Carters I love. If going outdoors I would dress in a romper with hat on.

ITA! DD #1 was born in late-June. We have CAC in the house and keep it at like 73ish....but she always wanted to be held, so she was always warm....so she was usually just in a short-sleeve onesie. And since she was swaddled to sleep and was still warm, sometimes she was just in her diaper inside the blanket, other times she was in a short-sleeve onesie and diaper inside the blanket.
I never layered DD in the summer. I'd dress her when we were out/about like I'd want to be dressed (just a onesie or romper) and would bring a sweater, blanket, etc in case it was cool.

i also love onesies b/c i find they keep the diaper in place better

Re: Dressing a newborn in summer
My first was a winter baby and it was so easy to dress him.
Right now I am unsure how to dress LO. I will have lots of onsies and rompers. I have AC in the apartment so if I find it too chilly i will put the cotton pjs on him.

Re: Dressing a newborn in summer
We have CA, so I plan on a footie long sleeve pj OR onsie and Miracle Blanket for sleeping.
He will be in the PJ during the day if we will be in the house.
If we are outside, I have a bunch of shorts and tee's and short sleeve jumpers.

Re: Dressing a newborn in summer
It's all about layering.
DD was born in early June so she was pretty young throughout the summer. When we were hanging around the house, she would usually be in a onesie with a blanket. At night we had her in a onesie or footie pajamas and wrapped her in a swaddling blanket. When we were out and about, she would be in an outfit or a onesie and "pants" and I was always sure to bring along a blanket.
