I am going to have to read it again once my brain returns to normal...but wow. just wow.

I loved the way he wrote the ending. and I just found the relationships so interesting.

I was obsessed with Tomas's character.
And the entire concept of the unbearable lightness of being...

Tomas was interesting to me for a variety of reasons...but Sabina's...I was jealous of hers.

I was a little scared of them both - I related to them a little too much for my comfort level.

He explains it though - the idea of the unbearable lightness of being focuses on Nietzche's (sp) theory of eternal occurence - that things that happen have happened before and will happen again and again.

Milan Kundera goes against this theory - and believes that we live one life - events only occur once and that things that happen only once may as well have never happened at all.

The 'lightness' is that things happen only once - there is no weight or bearing to it - our decisions don't matter. However because our decisions can potentially cause so much pain to others, there is a heaviness to these seemingly inconsequential decisions.

Take these ideas and apply them to relationships -- you have the unbearable lightness of being.

I highlighted the hell out of this book when I read it. I seriously love it.

Re: the Unbearable Lightness of Being

This book... ugh... it confounded me and delighted me at intervals.

I guess my challenge was that while Kundera argues against eternal recurrence - his argument brings just as much sadness to me as Nietzsche's feelings about Eternal Return. BOTH are saying - in their own ways - that life is.. I don't know.. irrelevant. The philosophies are way more parallel than seperate in my heart.

Having said that.. I did like it and I LOOOOVED the movie based on it. If you haven't seen the movie, Kundera wrote a poem that appears (only) in the film version that just slays me:

You can sleep. Sleep in my arms.
Like a baby bird.
Like a broom among brooms...
in a broom closet.
Like a tiny parrot.
Like a whistle.
Like a little song.
A song sung by a forest...
within a forest...
a thousand years ago.
